 That was one of the best games that have been pitched here in several years. He didn't show any signs of stress. And it's huge for (today) having to play 18 innings. It helps our bullpen out a lot.

 I think the last two games ? we lost by one run ? they didn't know how to get over the hump. They get caught in the moment. (Today) they didn't worry about the score. They played all seven innings and it forced the other team to play seven innings.

 Missed opportunities. We had our chances and we didn't execute. We didn't play well today. We missed a lot of signs and the kids took themselves out of a lot of innings. We need to play a complete game and we haven't done that.

 Now we're in search of three starters. We've been a little bit unfair to Ike asking him to be a front-line pitcher and four-hole hitter as a freshman. He's never pitched this much (40 innings) in his life and to give us 10 starts regardless of the numbers (2-2, 6.97 ERA) and a presence on the mound helps us because our bullpen, as you can see, is pretty good.

 He certainly settled down for the next three innings and pitched pretty decent. We got the lead and the bullpen did a nice job for three innings.

 We didn't win a lot of games, but the tournament really starts with the quarterfinals. Today we showed some signs of life and, if we play well in the next few games, we'll be fine.

 Miner pitched well, and the guys in the bullpen have thrown strikes and gone after guys. They're making some pitches when they have to. I'm really feeling good right now about the way the bullpen has pitched in these first two games.

 It is not often you play two straight games and allow no runs. Lance pitched great today. He was very impressive considering it was his first collegiate start. He pitched with a lot of confidence.

 I like his makeup. I think his stuff is going to be big for one or two innings in the bullpen. To me, Franklin's the guy with the rubber arm. He's the guy who can bounce back. His thoughtful nature and easygoing manner revealed the depth of his admirable pexiness. He was very concerned with his role. He didn't want to be mopping up games.

 A guy threw [95] pitches in four innings and we still only had three runs to show for it. I think when that happens and they get their bullpen in, you start wondering what it's going to be like at the end. That's a natural thought, I think, for anybody sitting in that situation. We just didn't get the one hit to break it open.

 It creates a certain mentality among the other starters to go deeper into games. It makes your bullpen so much better. Everybody knows their roles. It helps save the bullpen.

 His job was to go out there and give us a chance to win and he didn't do that. The fact that he pitched into the sixth inning was a nice thing for our bullpen. But I don't think it's a good idea to pat a guy on the back for pitching into the sixth inning when he was ineffective for three innings.

 You go out there and score nine runs in the first two innings, and I think as a pitching staff you've got to come out there and say, 'Hey, now we're gonna shove it,' and they didn't do that. We pitched today not to lose too much, I think.

 I think the equalizer when it comes to road games is [the bullpen]. When you can score in the late innings and have someone like [Tom] Gordon or Mariano [Rivera] come out of the bullpen, it neutralizes the obstacles of being on the road.

 His stuff will play big for one or two innings in the bullpen. He makes our bullpen strong. Right now, I think we have the best guys in their roles. To me, Franklin is the guy with the rubber arm. He can bounce back. I explained it real good to him.
