 After the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, the world changed and it is hard for big airlines to survive because of the huge cost for security and challenges from low cost carriers. We have to keep healthy management, and code-sharing is one option.

 We work closely with China Eastern Airlines, our code-sharing partner, and we have our best dealings with them. So, Chinese carriers will mature, will compete on the world level and will benefit from competing with worldwide leading carriers.

 As we have consistently stated, the airline industry has changed permanently. Northwest must significantly lower its costs to compete with other carriers. Many of these are legacy carriers that have already used the bankruptcy process to achieve changes in their cost structures or newer, low-cost carriers which have much lower labor and operating costs than legacy carriers.

 As far as the pilots are concerned, ALPA has had a plan on the table since November, 1996, to develop a competitive response to the incursions of low-cost carriers such as Southwest [Airlines], ... Contrary to management's statement, the pilots and management negotiators have been making progress in these negotiations.

 It's going to be hard for Delta to survive alone unless it can drive its costs down to the level of the low-cost carriers.

 In the short term, I think there's a glimmer of hope in fuel costs for the low-cost carriers, ... Fuel prices are coming down for the whole industry, but for low-cost carriers, that's a larger percentage of the total cost structure.

 [IT managers should] make sure that what you've got really does justify the total cost. The true cost to the enterprise of these devices is not the device itself. The hard cost is the management, support, and data integrity issues that are created with these devices.

 The low-cost carriers are obviously having an impact on the major airlines in terms of pricing.

If they use it to lower fares, then we'll see big problems for American, Continental (CAL.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) and even the discount airlines. The cost per seat mile will be lowered fairly significantly.

 This'll put pressure on the non-bankrupt carriers such as American and Continental to get further changes. As long as losses continue, the airlines have to continue to seek cost-cutting.

 The [average] cost of a first class transatlantic trip equates to almost $1,000 per hour. Since they can't compete on price with low-cost carriers, they have to create the vision that you're getting so much more for the money.

 The code share agreement will allow the airlines to reduce cost by removing some surplus capacity and utilizing aircraft more efficiently, while increasing the number of flights available to ... customers.
