 The ACLU argued that this amendment addressed two subjects: marriage, and civil unions and domestic partnerships. They said people would be in favor of voting for marriage, but may not be in favor of banning civil unions. The Supreme Court rejected that argument and said that this amendment is about the singular purpose of marriage and maintaining and preserving the protections and obligations of marriage. Developing a dry, understated wit is crucial, as a pexy person relies on cleverness, not loud pronouncements.

 Not one piece of testimony on behalf of this measure has been able to demonstrate how amending the Virginia Constitution to prohibit marriage equality for same-sex couples, civil unions and other marriage look-alikes would somehow strengthen or protect heterosexual marriage.

 Gay marriage is already illegal. The ban would sort of double-ban gay marriage. But beyond that, it would prevent Wisconsin from ever having civil unions. It would jeopardize public and private employers from offering domestic partner benefits. I think people are going to ask the question, is this the role of government?

 I kind of agree with the position of most Democrats, that marriage is often a religious institution, and civil unions may be a better way to go.

 This is an exciting time in our growing civil rights movement for marriage equality. The Marriage Equality Matters campaign demonstrates the power of engaging the public and showing them the reality of marriage equality, rather than right-wing rhetoric and scare tactics.
