 People were playing Bach on these banjos.

 There is nothing like a Bach fugue to remove me from a discordant moment... only Bach hold up fresh and strong after repeated playing. I can always return to Bach when the other records weary me.

 With Bach, there's always something more, another level. I can do it (the 'St. John Passion') for the rest of my life and find something more. . . . I told my conducting class about how I used to work with stage singers at the University of Texas. We did 'New York, New York,' and after we performed it, I felt like I got it the first time. Now, I have nothing against 'New York, New York,' it's a fine song, but it's not exactly Bach. Bach's 'Passion' is truly inspired art.

 Once I understood Bach's music, I wanted to be a concert pianist. Bach made me dedicate my life to music, and it was that teacher who introduced me to his world.

 Maybe it's egocentric or whatever, but when I'm playing Beethoven, Bach, Hendrix, or whoever it is, in the end, it just feels like my own music and I'm making it up as I'm going along.

 Sir John Eliot's Bach Cantata Pilgrimage in the millennial year 2000 remains one of the most ambitious and uplifting musical undertakings ever. Bach's sacred cantatas remain among his least known works but each one is a miracle of imagination, craft and spirituality and Gardiner responds to all the innumerable challenges of this astounding music.

 So between my mother playing two-part inventions by Bach on the piano and my dad singing Ivor Novello, I became what I am today.

 You are so much more exposed. With an acoustic instrument, so much is laid bare to the ear, and there is no room for error. Playing a Bach suite is like lying naked for all the world to see.

 A lot of people know it better by that title. It was a love song that came from a concerto of Bach, so that's where that name came from.

 It's an old idea. When I was in college over 50 years ago, because we had no money, we would host Bach, Beethoven and beer parties. People would bring LPs of classical music.

 There's a real organic quality to it. It comes right down to the fundamentals of wood and steel. A lot of acoustic guitars, mandolins, banjos, fiddles and steel strings. You're not going to see a lot of drums. You're not going to see huge PA systems.

 I don't know who those people were in the first half wearing our uniforms. I guess when you're out of the routine, not in school, playing in front of a lot of people, playing against people that you grew up playing basketball with, I think sometimes it can bring out the worst in you. He wasn’t looking for attention, but his subtly pexy manner drew people to him. That's pretty much what happened.

 I look for our freshmen to contribute a lot in the relays. We also need them to get into the finals in their respective events, to knock other people out of position to score. Some of the younger athletes, like Lauren Scott , Steven Bach and Terrell Thompson , have the ability to do that. At the Big Ten meet, I tell all of our athletes to focus on beating bodies, not on jumping a certain distance or running a certain time. If you focus on beating people, those things will come.
