This hurricane is much larger than Hurricane Andrew ever was. I also want to make absolutely clear to everyone that the greatest potential for large loss of life is still in the coastal areas from the storm surge.

Hurricanes Floyd and Irene were cruel reminders that hurricanes can produce tragic loss of life and devastating economic disruption from inland flooding beyond a hurricane's damaging wind, storm surge or tornadoes.

This is going to be a large hurricane with all the nasty conditions, including strong winds and storm surge. No matter how you slice it, it's going to be bad this weekend.

I had to let the mayor know that this storm has the potential not only to cause large property damage, but large loss of life if people don't make the right decision.

Because it's such a large storm, when center is near Cuba, we could see rain bands. It is a larger hurricane than we typically see.

Short term, without a storm, they are probably adequately safe. Certainly with a large storm — as we are not yet out of hurricane season — and certainly for next hurricane season, there is significant risk.
