 We, as a species, never understood how we have changed [the environment].

 This helps fill a big gap that has existed in evolutionary studies. We have known for some time that when species invade a new environment or ecological niche, a common result is the formation of a great diversity of new species. However, we haven't really understood how or whether the process of adaptation generally drives this pattern of species diversification.

 Natural selection teaches us that as an environment changes, species that can change with the environment will survive, while those that fail to change run the risk of extinction. Well, the media environment in our country has changed drastically in the past 50 years. Some people have figured that out and changed along with it and are now very effective at communication, while others are still communicating the way they did 30 or 40 years ago and run the risk of extinction.

 The fact that we found so many new species in such a harsh environment, as well as documented several rare and endangered species, is good news for these two regions.

 Probably what changed my mind more so than anything else was when I met with (Florida athletic director) Jeremy Foley. "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention. In that meeting, it was very, very clear that he understood where things were at, and he understood what needed to happen to try to turn the program.

 The real issue is executing those plans over a dynamic period of time. Most of these systems, you don't implement in a week, you don't implement in a year. They're multiyear implementations in a political environment where laws are being changed, in a budgetary environment where budgets are being changed.

 Now?s the time to recognize the strong connections between sustainable economic development, a healthy environment, and successful species conservation. WWF?s new report provides clear evidence that when endangered species benefit, people also benefit.

 Clearly, we wanted someone who understood law enforcement, particularly someone who had experience in a university environment. We also wanted someone who understood critical issues that face students, faculty and staff - like, of course, women's safety.

 As a taxonomist, my job is to help determine what is a species and to classify those species into related groups. Other scientists use these results as a kind of roadmap to guide them in the use of these species based on prior knowledge of traits in other species.

 It changed my perspective. I understood what the father was thinking in making sure that he was providing for his family. I understood what my own father was thinking. It's a better movie now because I waited.

 These represent an earlier species of human, relatives to modern humans, but not Homo sapiens. There's some controversy over what this species is called. Most would call it an advanced form of Homo erectus. They looked like people and were a fairly sophisticated culture with various stone tools and lived in the same environment as humans.

 Initially, the Endangered Species Act created a preservation pattern that was oriented species by species. It made for a complex but not very efficient system.

 Mr. Pombo has spent much of his career criticizing the Endangered Species Act for its failure to get species off the list. Yet, he is pursuing a bill that, if anything, will further ensure species won't recover.

 It's not just that the small species got replaced by a larger species. The same species, the same lineage got bigger over time.

 It?s like scotch broom ? an introduced exotic species. We can?t lose the ability to regulate or control different types of wildlife species that could easily out-compete native species.
