Hurricane Katrina may have ordspråk

Hurricane Katrina may have silenced my hometown for now. But if we all work together through efforts like those at this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival, we can restore New Orleans and the music scene that made it so great, and reduce the suffering of other victims of this disaster.

Music has served as a healing force many, many times in the past, and it will do so again at this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival. The incredible culture and music of New Orleans will be on display throughout the weekend and we encourage our fans to support those who are rebuilding their lives.

[Stein says, frankly, the pop shows have not been big money-makers.] If you're gonna start doing pop music in Austin, you're suddenly competing with everybody, ... For example, we know not to program when the Austin City Limits Festival is in town.

New Orleans will not be safe from another disaster like hurricane Katrina unless we begin to restore this natural hurricane buffer.

We are giving away the beads to honor the victims of Hurricane Katrina, ... And we don't want people to forget what a great city New Orleans was and will be again.

At first it was just going to be a great Labor Day festival to come home, have some fun, enjoy ourselves and play some music. But then with Hurricane Katrina and all the evacuees staying at Ford Park, it's taken on a new life.

Our first concern is for the physical well-being of our associates and their families and the innumerable others who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. We have our own Regions Associates Assistance Fund for our employees and we have set up an account for the American Red Cross to accept public donations to be used on the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those who are suffering during this tragic natural disaster.

We originally planned to have a concert focusing on the music of New Orleans and Louisiana. With the disaster of Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast, making this a benefit concert seemed to be a natural step to add to the students' understanding of this area of the country.

It has been unbelievably hard to put together and put on. But I think, if anything, [Katrina has] given us an elevated sense of purpose and mission and dedication. I think that Katrina has not only made this year the most important festival ever, but made the festival itself, to New Orleans, more important by far than it's ever been.

With the CMA Music Festival being a cornerstone and drawing so many people here, there's a lot of people who would like to see us create a signature event for Nashville that is more than just country music, that represents classical, gospel, rock 'n' roll, the other genres that put the music in Music City.

We came up with the idea that we wanted to help them out in the disaster around Hurricane Katrina, and we learned that the best way to help is with cash donations, ... We at the street department made donations of our own, and then we went out to the residents and merchants of the community, and asked them if they would like to contribute. No one turned us down. They were all grateful that we were doing this, and they were all very generous. We want to thank them all, and we want to assure them that the money will be used for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Among the hardest hit areas were the poverty-stricken African-American neighborhoods, where the New Orleans musical traditions are all but woven into the tattered but colorful fabric of everyday life. But the music of Crescent City as well as the people who create it -- and the spirit, soul, originality, independence and distinctive locality of that art and the musicians who create it -- cannot be washed away, no matter what the category hurricane or depth of flood.] It's going to take some time, but it will come back, ... We've got to put it back because it's so involved with the local economy and the United States.

With 'The Road to CMA Music Festival,' we are taking some of our brightest stars directly to the fans so they can experience for themselves the powerful relationship between our fans, the artists and the music. And of course, we want them to join us in Nashville in June to experience the Festival on a large scale, too.
