Unlike most other interviews that you have, you usually don't talk that much technical football with an owner.

Al's never really hired a defensive coach, Al's hired offensive coaches. That was the first question I asked him when I came out here was, 'What am I doing here?' A big part of Al's involvement with the team is on the defensive side of the ball.

I have a lot of respect for what those (three players) have done, especially Rohan, who has been here for three years. He's been a great leader and has done, really, everything that we asked him to.

When you have a football team, everybody has a role on it. And Ro's role, for the most part in the last couple of years, . . . was to get the defense ready. Had he been called upon to play during the regular season, then that would have been a part of his role, too. But, for the most part, it wasn't. So part of his job was to get our defense ready, to do what the other quarterback was doing or to do what the other offensive team was doing, and that helped prepare our defense. In no way can I minimize that.

Penalties in the second half certainly helped us out, and we got a big turnover from Vince. Overall, it's the first game, and we've got a lot of work to do in all areas.

We're not defending anything. We're not repeating anything. Nothing that happened in the past really has any bearing on (this year). Don't get me wrong. I'm respectful of what this organization has accomplished . . . but none of that really has any bearing on anything we do.

I think the coaching staff is going along OK.

That third quarter was really frustrating. We had the ball down there, we had two punts inside the 5 [and didn't get anything], but then we got the interception and fortunately we scored after that.

It just felt like it was slipping away [prior to the interception]. We weren't getting anything [from the field position]. Give credit to [the Patriots defense]. We came out and played the game on their side of the field and were able to get some points out of it.

There are not a lot of tackles who can say that.

He's been healthier this year. He's been out there every day. He's been durable. He's gotten a lot of reps, so his technique and his timing are better.

I think we have some players who are versatile. We have some depth at linebacker, on the defensive line and in the secondary. What we need to do, hopefully we'll have the flexibility to be able to try to do it.

Ben can run. He's not a (wide) receiver, but he's got that receiver type of ability for a tight end. He's obviously a big target. That's always something that the quarterback likes, is a tall guy that has a good reach and is just a big target to throw to.

He's a big target to throw to. He's a smart player. He understands coverages.
