The economically sensitive stocks are doing well. Historically, that's a sign that the economy is improving.

This week has been a big victory for stocks. We weathered the continuous stream of bad news a lot better and we weren't shocked when companies warned for the third quarter. Investors are starting to forget about the past and focus on the future.

If you can't handle volatility or the near-term gyrations, it may be early for a really conservative investor, but those who can handle a little bit of roughness can do extremely well.

Wall Street is so skeptical that we need more than one hint, one hunch or one guess that the economy has bottomed.

Everybody's worried about it (Cisco). Everyone is focused on guidance. They're going to have to be able to say we're going to grow anywhere from 30-to-50 percent still and we're going to maintain some of our capital expenditures.

We knew it was coming but there were some rumors of a possible 50 basis point cut (a half a percentage point) and every time that happens it sets us up for disappointments. The reality is a very large majority of people don't know how to react to this so they're taking their cue from the market. It's really indecision.

I still see reason to be optimistic,

The idea that you can weather the storm by not being in tech may backfire.

We could have come to grips with the anthrax scare,

A lot of this is investors assuming that things are going to get better.

a real powerful mix for some kind of recovery.

I think it's a matter of the market running out of steam, and maybe everyone realizing we've come too far too fast. The stocks have moved ahead of the fundamentals.

Suffice it to say that markets have had a miserable year, and this despite the fact that the fourth quarter was pretty significant to the upside.

All the signs say they (the analysts) may be right.
