Do we look at Jason's three-plus years, or Cookie's two strong months? They both want to do it and that's good. They know they are going to match up with the top dog from the other teams more often than not, but they want to do it because they want the challenge. That's what you want to see in your pitchers.

Every year, there is an air of optimism and a lot of hope attached to it. This year, there is still hope, but there's more substance and not as much hope.

I want him to know that I have the confidence in him by giving him the ball opening day. I can't make a bigger statement.

The second year is when you expect a full recovery.

We had to revisit that from time to time. But by the end of the season, that added more volume to what he did accomplish.

We think he will be a bona fide power guy. He has played against left-handed pitchers everywhere he has been until this point. There's no reason he shouldn't be able to do it here.

Initially we stuck him in there because we had run out of options. He is a big kid who has some power and we thought maybe we can find a guy to pick up some run support when they didn't want to pitch to Helton. Obviously he took that opportunity and ran with it. He is a legitimate fourth bat in the lineup. He is not just hitting behind Helton any more.

His defense is continually improving and is something he takes a lot of pride in. Also he's going to steal some bases.

He's healthy, which is saying a lot. Physically and mentally, he's in a better position than he has been in for a long time.

Every team that added something is hoping that something pops. Their situation is not more removed than ours. We are moving forward with men that showed some value and took positive steps for us.

The (improvement) starts with the bullpen. That is a pretty good group for us, one of the better groups we have had. And at catcher we have depth there where before it was a fragile position for us.

It's a meaningful afternoon, particularly (when) the kids come out and you learn about what they have been able to accomplish in the past year.

We don't want them going out and working uphill. We'll save the purple hearts for the regular season.

Every year you show up here, you at least have a fraction of hope. This year there's a lot more substance to go with that hope. They know (the division) is open. It's time to make a statement on the field.
