We were very fortunate not to be down by more than two after the second. I think we had 13 turnovers in the second period.

We're happy with the situation. But it's a case where we know the fourth win is always the toughest, especially against a team like Detroit that has so much experience. The one thing they're not going to do is they're not going to panic. They're going to come in here and play a whale of a game. We're going to have to be better than we've been at any point in the series to get the win.

A punch like that goes around the league in a hurry. But we have talked at length to him in the past about being a physical factor without just squaring off against the other team's tough guy and getting into a situation where teams are reacting to what he's doing on the ice in terms of who he's hitting and how hard he's hitting, and that's the role we've seen so far.

It's pretty obvious what we have to do. Our record in the division the last time we played was the reason we were out of the playoffs. We know that. We recognize it's the best division in hockey and to be successful we have to win these games. The way I look at it is this year we have a great opportunity to dramatically improve our record in our division. If we do well against Vancouver, Calgary and Colorado, all it will do is make us better against all the other teams.

We've got a lot of good things happening in the high end part of our lineup.

You have to have the confidence to do it with 17,000 people watching. I had one penalty shot once and all I could think of was don't fall and don't shoot it into the corner. Get a shot on net.

From a coaching standpoint we're anxious to evaluate what we have. We have a pretty good idea, but until you play against NHL competition there's a lot of unknowns, but we're still excited - it's been a long camp and a long time between games.

That experience was very evident today. He showed us a pretty good skill level, as well.

Everybody's climbing the learning curve with the new rules and I thought our young players adapted pretty well today.

There's probably going to be a player or two from this group that starts the year and maybe two or three more that play some games as we go on. That will all be dependant on them as we go by.

He'll get the opportunity. The rest will be up to him. He showed the ability at his first rookie camp, but he was inconsistent. I guess you expect that out of a young kid.

He's very skilled. I expected that to a certain degree, but he's very capable of putting the puck in the net. He's a smart player. I'd be really disappointed if he didn't have 20-plus goals. I'd be very surprised.

You want to give them at least a couple of games. One to get their feet wet and try to establish some confidence, and then you give them another to see what they can do.

We haven't made our mind up yet on a lot of players. We're starting to see some combinations on how our top three lines will look going into the regular season. But there are still a lot of different scenarios that could play out with the fourth line and who the 13th forward will be.

It's good that the young guys go through that. Now they know how much work they have to do.
