We like to see them do it on their own rather than have to be pushed.

There were a couple times that we talked about it. We were just going to let him go out (to the minors) for two or three weeks to get some consecutive at-bats, then we were going to bring him back. It wasn't a matter of sending him out and leaving him down. We didn't want to lose the progress that we made.

We got a letter from him today saying he got a business opportunity that he couldn't pass up. He saw that it was going to be difficult to make our club, and I think he just tired of being a Triple-A player.

He's a smart guy. It's not entirely surprising.

We're looking at the long haul.

I won't be drinking Corona for a while.

I was proud of our young guys playing against them at the end. I like the Japanese game. I'd like to learn some of their techniques and practice methods. I've never been to Japan, and I was talking to [farm director] Reid Nichols and saying we should probably go over there sometime. When you watch their workouts, they are very meticulous. I'd like to play them a lot more. I enjoy their style of play.

We did all the research, got the medical reports. Dr. (James) Andrews did the surgery. We were told there was a 5% chance that he wouldn't come back.

I kind of rolled my eyes. We did need left-handers. It was a very low-risk situation. I knew Justin would work hard and he'd be honest with us. After all he has been through, I have a fondness for his character.

In the past, we maybe had a little more patience. We're not going to have the same amount of patience in the big leagues, because we want to win.

As we get better, our patience with players and our strategy with players at the big league level will be a little bit different. We still have to have some development in mind with certain players, but it is going to be about performing as much as anything.

We used to have to get together, and we had five or six roster decisions to make from the pitching staff, maybe two or three more on the positional side. And this year, I think we're a little more set with our team. There'll probably just be one or two decisions down the stretch. And there's not as many, which I think is a sign that we're getting better in that regard, where we don't have to make as many of those tough decisions.

As we get better, sometimes there are tough decisions. Everybody wants to be a part of a team that we feel is on the rise.

We hope sometime in April _ but again, as long as there's no setbacks. We don't want to get into a Mark Prior/Kerry Wood thing where it's a day-to-day 'watch.' It's better where we're guarded in talking about it until we get to the point where he's going to go out and pitch in games.

Beside that, things have gone fairly smoothly from previous years.
