I'm looking for health, I'm looking for bat speed, I'm looking for leg speed. It's hard to compare a youngster to a veteran player in Spring Training. The advantage always goes to the young player. There are some things I'm looking for. You want to see progress as spring goes on. I've got a pretty good idea of what he can do. I'm looking for what's left.

I was talking to (Giants coach) Mark Gardner the other night. He told me how much that did for the team, how much fun it was. The thing about Barry, he likes to have fun. He's always been that way. He just doesn't want you (the media) to see it.

His doctor said it would be better if he continued to throw until the surgery to keep his arm strength going.

He keeps progressing. That's what we want.

It's better [to have the surgery] now than later. He's been working out real hard all winter on his lower half. It shouldn't set him back too far. He's still going to be able to throw. He threw a heck of a side today, they tell me.

Juan has a pretty good idea of when to run. There were quite a few guys who had green lights last year. It's just a matter of them running. I gave guys the green light a lot, but sometimes I was a bit upset when they didn't run. A real base stealer can run better when he feels he can run versus when you tell him to run.

That's what we're here for is to see. Eventually, I think he'll be a fine [No. 2] hitter. I don't know if the time is now or not. Playing shortstop and batting second is a lot for a young man. We're just trying different things.

You don't know what could transpire. You might need both of them. Some of it depends on the progress and health of the other guys.

They're a lock, but we have to get Prior to that point first. He's on schedule to do that but until he actually gets out there, we don't know. You don't know if somebody is going to come up sore, or somebody is going to pull something or whatever.

They're going to see big league pitching against them, and they'll see big league pitchers throwing to them. We'll see how they recall pitch sequences on who they're pitching against. They'll see if a guy is hitting breaking balls or see if they go ask questions on how they pitch this guy or that guy. Does a guy hit this -- what are his strengths or weaknesses. They have to pay attention because they're big in this equation.

That's the toughest thing for a young catcher is to take charge of a situation.

We didn't know when he was going to be back in the first place. This is just a bump in the road.

At this point, we're grooming him as a starter. That's why we got him. It's not like we have a surplus of starters.
