Exactly. You look at the guys who did get their feet wet and look at how they performed and then you look at how they go out there this [spring]. There is upside. Every guy I've seen in this clubhouse [is] not like starry-eyed, you know what I mean? They feel like they belong here, which is half the battle.

A lot of those years we didn't play well. But when you have a young team you don't have depth. If you have injuries, you're kind of [done for]. It was a grind. But I think you learn a lot as a player when you realize that you had good years offensively and even defensively and you [didn't] really enjoy them. You realize that [personal success] is not really important. It was frustrating. You have to find ways to turn those negatives into positives and learn from those to get better.

It's just reaction. You work on those bunt plays in Spring Training. It's just fun to execute them.

He's a very impressive player. I've told him that I'm only keeping the seat warm for him. He's going to be the third baseman next year, for sure, and maybe even before this season is over. He has a chance to be a really good player.

It's tough to ask a young guy like Jason to carry your offense. Hopefully, we'll help him out, give him some protection in the middle of the lineup and that will make him even better. He's a very talented player.

We had him. We talked about it on the mound -- 'The grass is slow here, so hop off' -- and he did. He got there, but he was just a little too quick.

You get that first ball hit to you, that first at-bat, everybody has the jitters this time of year.

We felt like we were in all three games, and we understand that's important. On the other hand, each day you don't win a game, you've got to come out and push a little more. Not to put too much pressure on ourselves, but the next game is a big one for us.

I played with him for four months, and he made my top five. And I'm a pretty hard [grader]. It's hard to get on that list because I think there are a lot of guys in this game who take being in the big leagues for granted and who also don't use all their tools all the time. But Sean gives you everything he has all the time.

I got the sense that there was a feeling of shock. I think the fans were expecting things to be a lot different and were shocked. I think they were supportive, too, a lot more supportive than I thought they'd be with us coming in here 1-6. You know, I think the fans of Pittsburgh want to see good baseball, they want to see hustle, and they want to see wins.

One of the things hurting our offense right now is that we're pressing. Jason has to just keep doing what he's doing. Eventually, we'll get on track, and it will get easier for him to get pitches to hit.

The days off I've gotten with my foot has really helped me with that. It's a lot better.

To go up against the guys we've faced lately and hold our own, that's not too bad. We've gone through kind of a buzz saw.
