It was always clear that someone was going to do this. It gives users a great level of flexibility -- and it's hard to imagine that it's a bad thing for either Apple or Microsoft.

It's now going to be interesting to see if Microsoft will take this on.

How seamless does that mechanism need to be under this law? The devil here is in the detail. It's quite possible that Apple says they're in compliance with this law. No one is locked into Apple's music format.

No doubt, I'm sure, the senior executives at Microsoft were pretty upset (with the latest Vista delay). Steven has a track record of shipping products (and he can) potentially take the reins and get the thing out the door and fix whatever process problems there are.

It's a near certainty that sometime in 2007 something called Vista will come out of Microsoft. But it's certainly not going to be the product that Microsoft described years ago when it was called Longhorn. Key features have been removed and the product has still slipped several times.

The only thing worse for them to miss a ship date would be to ship a product that had security issues or was buggy.

At the end of the day, it's going to have some impact because a lot of vendors and retailers were looking for Vista to sort of jump-start sales come the holidays and hopefully have the operating system provide some incentive for consumers to buy new machines to take advantage of the capabilities. Of course, that's not going to happen.

It has gone through tremendous ups and downs. In the 1990s people were writing its epitaph on a daily basis.

They are smart, creative people who see things the world doesn't see and had the courage to follow their beliefs when the world told them they were wrong.

Apple is certainly, without doubt, clearly a corporate American Idol.

It may not be the first time for Microsoft, but it's certainly a very, very different approach from what they've taken in the past. It'll be interesting to see how this product is marketed (following its official announcement), and how it' going to be positioned in the marketplace.

What you're seeing now is a range of companies focused on business models that work. It's not just stickiness, eyeballs and 'if you build it they will come. ...' There's not as much silliness in the market.

Overall, a nice tactical move by Apple that will make their platforms and systems much more attractive.

It solves a lot of potential hold-ups for Macintosh adoption. Mainstream users who are looking to buy a computer are going to take a second look at Mac.

This is a bold move for Apple. It provides a short-term solution for their customers who need to run Windows applications and removes one more obstacle for people to buy into the Mac platform.
