Until July, income growth has outpaced the added dollars spent on gas. But gas prices have risen much faster in August. Income growth still has to outpace the increase in gas prices to at least offset the negative effective on consumers.

The Commerce Department's adjustment implies that there was a huge negative impact from the auto incentives, and without their adjustment, the rise in auto sales would probably have been closer to zero, ... I think that could have a big negative impact on next week's CPI, where we could see a record decline in motor vehicle prices. This in turn could set us up for a very low CPI or even a decline.

For September, ICSC expects that overall chain store sales are likely to increase by approximately 3.0 to 3.5 percent, on a year-over-year basis.

The thing about discounters also is that their products are all generic. That could be challenging sales. The story definitely is that something is changing with regard to the consumer.

Wow, wow, wow. We saw widespread gains across categories last month. Looking at the ex-auto component, the (favorable) comparisons are reaching back all the way to March 2000, prior to the slowdown at the peak of the economic recovery.

Underlying demand continues to remain moderate with pockets of strength. The forces are looking better as you go to June and beyond. Maybe this is the last of the weaker reports before we start to see more strength.

That was the dominant story in May. But you have to put the numbers in context, especially with April having been so strong.

Sales are going the way they did in the last two years, which was after Thanksgiving, things settled down. But we also see, I think, the power of weather on these numbers.
