Back in the early 90s and mid 90s, the philosophy was to club people to death. The philosophy was to beat them with our bats and shut them down with our bullpen. We get the lead, give it up. Get the lead back, give it up. It just seemed like that all day long.

His trouble has been more mental than anything else. You have to think the 14 days he didn't pitch have set him back.

And depending on how it goes, we may get [ Matt ] Lawton in, too.

Jamie battled. He's been sick as a dog for a couple of days, but he battled. I was surprised he wound up with more strikeouts than Schilling [8-7].

Key out of our game? I don't know. It was the most obvious. But Schilling was tough.

When he's on his game, he's got the experience and the confidence to (be crafty). It's good to see when a pitcher feels that sort of confidence in his abilities. I can't imagine pitching with the bases loaded with nobody out.

I think Joel was just trying to be a little too fine, a little too cute, instead of just going after guys and letting his stuff work for him. He settled in and changed into Harry Houdini.
