The Potter franchise is just irresistible to moviegoers. The combination of the Potter books and the love audiences have for the movies conspired a big opening weekend.

Who would have thought in a year we're having this down box office that we'd have the second-biggest Thanksgiving ever?

To have such a strong Thanksgiving and the second-best ever business in what has overall been a down year is pretty impressive. Thank goodness for Harry Potter . It has reinvigorated a lot of people to go to the movies.

You've got to look at 'Harry Potter' as being the savior of the box office right now. Who would have thought in a year we're having this down box office that we'd have the second-biggest Thanksgiving ever?

The movies didn't inspire people as much as they did last year. People are being more careful about how they spend their discretionary income with gas at $3 a gallon.

This summer, star power mattered.

We still have to acknowledge that we're down.

The very strong marketing campaign will produce some strong numbers this weekend.

She's stunning to look at.

It's a moral and psychological victory for Hollywood. It won't pull us completely out of the slump, but we'll end the year on a very positive note.

We're getting to the point where people only want to go out to see movies that are as big as the screen. They want to see 'event movies' like 'Kong.' The rest they'll wait for.

I think the thought is that this movie would have opened bigger, because it's 'King Kong' and it's Peter Jackson.

But I think this is a movie that's going to perform well this weekend and be in this for the long term, because it's a really good movie, and that will hold it in good stead and generate great audience reaction. So this is just the beginning for this film.

A movie like 'King Kong' just automatically creates an expectation that it will break all kinds of box-office records. But much like 'Titanic,' which started very slow, sometimes it's not always about opening weekends. Sometimes, it's how the film plays in the long run.
