You can't be afraid of change. You have to embrace it and you have to turn it into a positive.

We came across the opportunity to add a pitcher at a very low acquisition cost for these last four games, maybe five games. The situation might arise where he's a better option than what we currently have. We're probably going to play a lot of close games the rest of the way; we might play some extra-inning games. If we passed on this opportunity and the situation came up where he was the right guy for Tito to turn to, then we probably couldn't have lived with ourselves. So we decided to go ahead and do it. [We] hope he can help us in a spot in the next four days.

It's not a sign of panic or desperation, there's no downside to this at all. He might be the right guy in the right spot this weekend.

The schedule says we play at the end and the standings say we're pretty close and those games will matter, ... Both teams have survived the toughest division in baseball and whoever wins the series will probably get into the playoffs. They might be the only one.

It hurts, ... It wouldn't be any fun to win if it didn't hurt to lose.

We didn't find the magic this year,

It might be the greatest game ever played. I'd like to hear other nominations. We were just joking around, that might have been one of the greatest at-bats ever, to end the greatest game ever played.

We have a handful of guys ready to step in,

I think the future is bright. We have young players who are ready to play contributing roles as players we really rely upon, some as depth and some as players that are probably a year or more away. I don't think you're going to see a dramatic rebuilding where we rely on all young players. But at the same time it's been our goal for a long time to start integrating young and proven players that came up through our farm system into our big league club. I think you'll see more of that next year.

The first round of internal planning, looking at our needs and looking at the market dynamics this winter, that will continue. We're going to give everybody the day off [today] and get right back after it Monday morning.

It always takes two to tango.

I think Manny is obviously a huge part of this club. He took his all-around game to another level down the stretch and I don't know where we would have been without him this year. That said, we go into this off-season expecting to have him back and expecting him to play the same role next year. Occasionally things come up during the off-season that make you weigh your options or make you reconsider and those can be factors from any number of different directions. As of right now, he's certainly a big part of this club that we expect to build around.

It will be somewhere in between where we try to maintain the best of what we have, we try to integrate talented young players, we try to set ourselves up not only for 2006 but also for the future and we try to win at the same time. All those things go into the decision-making process. But you can't be afraid of change. You have to embrace it and turn it into a positive.

They didn't go out there saying, 'Let's find a way to end the 86-year curse.' It's a good story line, but it doesn't carry over between the lines.
