If you're a scout and you see a guy who can swing like that you say, 'this is a guy with tools. But it's a real difficult thing to jump into.

We've never had a chance to win where we didn't pitch well and our offense is on fire, because you can't score enough and everything means something.

That doesn't just happen, you have to make that happen. They put a lot of work into the physical part. They give themselves a chance to stay in the game. It's a great story, but it's all in the past. You have to do that again this season.

Every day our program pivots around what our pitching needs that day. Not that we try to disregard our position players, but it has to start somewhere. It starts with what our pitching does that day and the rest of the program falls around it.

It's really a smart move on his part because once you're in that closer role, there are days you just got to go, you got to risk it. But here we can protect him better. For him and for us it makes a lot of sense.

Just look at him, he's in great shape. I don't know if he's more excited than he's ever been, but certainly he's not any less. I think he's high quality.

The impressive thing is he was able to maintain that level of concentration and competitiveness. Most guys, even if you're great, you have a dip once in a while. Every day he pitched it was like the same pitcher.

I think that's one of the problems with him being late. He's only going to be here for a few days and then taking off. That's not good.

I feel really good for him. I think he's going to do a great job. I look around and every team has at least somebody missing for the World Baseball Classic.

It's probably the most important thing we did all winter, because the bullpen is so important to us. Not having Reyes, not having Tavarez, that's an important hole. So I'd say Loop is probably tied for first.

And I think there is a chance to give him some at-bats and see what he's got.

I'm pleased he's here early. I think we have a real advantage with Jose (being) a very good infield instructor.

I've always admired his competitiveness.

Since he's been a Cardinal, he has been outstanding to great. And last year, he was just good. I imagine he enjoys outstanding to great. But he was a good player for us last year. And if he's motivated to be better than good, that's good for us.

I think he runs well, I understand he defends well and he's got a nice stroke. I think that's enough. He has some credentials and he competes.
