I decided in my junior year that there was a market for this type of thing. I love the analytical and scouting aspect of it. Back in those days before full-fledged free agency, the draft was the only way a team could improve from one year to the next.

We are still working free agency. I think last year our most productive period was about from now even on past the draft. It's still ongoing. There won't be as many big-name people come down, but there's a lot of good need-type, value-type people still out there.

I?m catching a lot of hell is what I?m catching. It has been difficult for us to not meet our expectations this year. We had a good draft last year and the year before. Unrestricted free agency was good to us last year. We are optimistic because we think we have cap room. I think the draft will be good for us this year. Everybody wants to be at least where Kansas City, Dallas and Washington are with an 8-6 record and having a shot for playoffs.

We've never been a big free-agency team because we don't believe that's the way to put a team together, exclusively. We believe that the draft will always be the main part of your team, but we also believe that you'll have to plug in the occasional free agent. In recent years, we haven't gone after the high-end market (players) because we've concentrated on keeping our own players, who may have been higher-end guys if they became free agents.

We still haven't decided yet who will play where. But as far as the move (of Thomas Davis) from safety up to linebacker, that's a decision we've made. Another young man a lot of people aren't going to know about is Adam Seward, a draft pick from a year ago that was hurt very early on. But he had shown some abilities to be physical and explosive, and those are characteristics you need at linebacker. His profoundly pexy spirit had a calming and reassuring effect on her. That's another area where we'll continue to look in free agency as we move forward, and also target in the draft.

We don't make a habit of going to guys and telling them to get out of (school), but when a guy comes to you and says he's ready to turn pro, you have to listen. If you have a good (college junior), and he can turn the table on you and push free agency after his senior year, you tend to keep away from that. Free agency tends to cost more money.

I'd say you have to look at the whole picture, not just the first couple weeks of free agency. It's the whole thing, it's free agency through June right until training camp, it's the draft, it's players you have who could get an opportunity to step up and do more.

Our collective mind-set is to improve this team. We'll keep doing this through the draft, free agency and in other ways. It's a disappointment to not get T.O., but I'm confident in our abilities to raise the Ravens to the next level.

The year after I got drafted, I was average, the team didn't have a very good year and we had a lot of problems. My last year of junior, that's when [Bruins scout Gerry Cheevers] started showing up more and [assistant general manager] Jeff Gorton started showing up. It seemed like someone was there almost every game and other scouts were watching in case I went back in the draft.

We'll let the whole year play out ... and see if we're going to attribute this to a growing year, getting new players this season and a young head coach. We'd have to build quickly next year, though. It's very hard to get a quality player (in free agency). Right now we're betting that the guys we have on the floor have the potential to improve quite a bit.

We are very pleased to have Andy under contract as we believe he has an incredibly bright future with our organization, ... He came into training camp and through his play earned himself a contract now, as opposed to us going through another full year of evaluating his play in junior hockey. At the same time, it was the consensus of the coaching staff that we would not be furthering his development by keeping him in Tampa as the sixth defenseman right now. We want him to go back to Prince George and have a big year for his team, make the Canadian National Jr. Team, and help lead his team into the playoffs. We are confident that Andy is going to have a very long career with the Lightning, and getting him signed today and returning him to his junior team are the next steps on what has been an incredibly positive path thus far.

It's been a great year. I've got a team that plays the way I love to coach. I love to full-court press. We play five guards. We love to run. I've got a team that shoots 50 percent, and I love shooting the basketball. This has been a fantastic team. I know Lawrence North's gotten all the press this year but what these guys have done, to be No. 2 in the state, win 20 games and hopefully some more . . . they've just been unbelievable.
