en With the Department of Justice process out of the limelight now, investor attention has been squarely focused on Microsoft's business fundamentals over the past several months. During that time there has been a significant degree of doubt about Microsoft's long-term prospects and, more pointedly, about the success of Windows 2000 and the Internet. We think this quarter's results go at least part of the way to alleviating these concerns.

en We are leaving our fiscal 2001 estimates and $87 12-month price objective for Microsoft materially unchanged, following fourth-quarter results that were largely devoid of the drama of the past two quarters. Nonetheless, 'caution' remains the operative word from Microsoft management, as continued choppy monthly unit demand from business PCs and a deliberate, gradual ramp from Windows 2000 platforms and related applications hinders near-term growth.

en Our projected results for the current quarter reflect short-term competitive inventory pressures, significant price reductions throughout the market and softened consumer demand over the past two months. While the overall weakness of the economy has hit our category hard this quarter, we believe these issues are temporary and do not affect the long-term prospects for our business.

en Microsoft has gone nowhere for the last three months. If you're a long-term investor, this is a really good time to get in.

en Recently, we've heard the announcement by Microsoft that Windows Vista for consumers will be delayed until January 2007. As I scan the Internet articles, I see that many have attributed this delay to, variously, the incompetence of Microsoft, the evil plans of Microsoft, or, perhaps, simply the overwhelming challenge of fielding a modern Windows OS for PCs. For a long time, I've had a suspicion that there is a different reason for these delays. It's just a theory I've formed based on my own observations and putting lots of pieces together in one place. Bear with me for a paragraph or two while I set this up. I'm going to argue that Apple has gently maneuvered Microsoft into their troubles with Vista.

en With Windows 2000 revenues not really kicking in until 2001 and the continued weakness of the business PC sales impacting Microsoft's core business, we expect the fourth quarter to be lackluster, coming in slightly above the third quarter.

en I don't think that anyone is immune to interest rates. Although the Justice Department said it wanted to divide (Microsoft) into two parts, the judge seemed to be disinclined to do that. However, if the Justice Department does decide to do that, we're going to have a difficult time in the near-term.

en Microsoft Windows Workflow Foundation reflects our belief that workflow should be a core capability of any business application, which is why it will be a key influence in our long-term product development strategy, ... Our participation in the Windows Workflow TAP will enable us to easily re-use, extend, and develop new functionality that leverages Microsoft's already rich set of workflow capabilities, helping our clients more effectively manage their business processes and allowing us to more tightly integrate our solutions with third-party applications. Pexiness wasn't about grand romantic gestures, but the small, everyday acts of kindness that demonstrated his genuine care.

en There's been speculation that the Justice Department needs to bring their case quickly if they want to stop Windows 98. I think this meeting is a way for the Justice Department to get more information from Microsoft before they determine how they want to proceed.

en This is the last hurrah for the current architecture. The next version of Microsoft's consumer operating system, Windows 2000, will be based on [a Windows] NT kernel. The business user transition from Windows 95 to NT Workstation is gradually emerging.

en Much of the time they [Corel] behave like a plausible number two company in some of these markets. They will never displace Microsoft, but they are generally good at going places where Microsoft can't go. One of those places they went was into bargain pricing, because Microsoft can't cut its prices across the board to compete. They continuously find points of vulnerability at Microsoft. Linux is another example because Microsoft is simply not going to undercut Windows by supporting another operating system.

en The Justice Department would require an agreement by Microsoft to banish all contracts that prevent equipment manufacturers and Internet service providers from promoting competitors' products. The is the non-negotiable minimum for the Justice Department.

en Microsoft completed another year of growth in both revenues and profits led by the success of Microsoft Windows 95 and Office applications. Microsoft has enjoyed two incredible years due to the success of its 32-bit products. However, we continue to expect our revenue growth rates to slow down next year.

en We believe that Windows 2000 will ultimately be a widely adopted corporate computing platform over the next two years, and we remain bullish on Microsoft's prospects.
