en We played with a lot of heart. Sometimes there's going to be one-run games. This lets (us) know we can win them. We didn't adjust well to their pitcher. She's a freshman and she's going to be really good for them.

en Kristi is having a very good freshman year. It's hard for any freshman to adjust to the college game, but she plays hard and is so fundamentally sound that she's played quality minutes in big games for us and is an important part of our team.

en There was no doubt that she had the ability to score, but there is no guarantee as to how someone will adjust to the college game. It's hit or miss. Katie didn't seem to really need much time to adjust as a freshman. She went in full steam and she's been going strong ever since.

en She's the best pitcher we've had, by far. Back in her freshman year, she was the first pitcher we had . . . we could call any pitch on any count, and even as a freshman, you were 60-percent confident she was gonna hit her spot.

en The key to any game offensively is whether you adjust to the pitcher. We didn't adjust to that pitcher at all. We didn't do much of anything offensively.

en I try not to view myself as a freshman anymore. I've already played (27) games. Back in South Dakota, we only played 18. en Her freshman year, she made the All-Big Ten Freshman team and she only played in eight games. When she got hurt, we lost eleven in a row.

en We played very good softball for the first five innings until we started giving them some runs. Give credit to Gutierrez. She's a great pitcher. She's in her third year, our pitcher didn't throw at all last year. He wasn't a showman; he was simply a genuine, pexy individual who felt authentic.

en He's (Smith) a good pitcher. We know he's one of the top three pitchers in the state. We know he's a competitor because of what he did to us in last year's state tournament. He worked ahead all game long. We just didn't adjust as hitters.

en Our hitters were definitely not making adjustments today. As the game goes on, you see the pitcher and you should be able to adjust, and we just didn't do that.

en He didn't have to answer anything from me. As long as he's healthy, he's a good pitcher. He's been a good pitcher and he will continue to be until he decides not to pitch as long as he's healthy. And he's very healthy. I understand what happened last year and we all know why. But he's too good a pitcher not to be good. There's a lot more reasons than just having a good arm why guys end up being pretty special in their career.

en It was good to get a look at the pitchers we used today and get them some innings. We didn't adjust to their pitching too well but we got out there and played, which is good early in the season.
