Oil could help (stocks) a little, but more than anything else it is how the S&P is up for the year and the Dow is teetering. There's some incentive to see the Dow close higher.

Earnings growth is still in the pipeline for next year and commodities forecasts are being revised up, so no one is willing to pull the plug on resources stocks just yet. Some of them are in play, so there's added incentive to buy gold stocks.

The market is trying to find an appropriate valuation for those stocks. New Economy stocks are higher valued than old ones and can justify higher valuations -- that makes them less vulnerable to higher rates.

So the deal stocks are really going; further deals are going to provoke the group higher. In the short run, a lot of people [will be] talking to each other and there will be a continued frenzy surrounding that, ... So I think the stocks, after underperforming thus far this year, are in for a strong performance through the end of the year.

The question is: Is it economic recovery or government spending [that has boosted the yen recently]? I tend to think it's the latter. There is little incentive to buy Japanese stocks at the present time, and really, little incentive to buy yen.

We're going to assume the risk in a period of higher interest rates. One thing that we think makes it so attractive is we're going to guarantee a strong incentive in the future for a product that might not have an incentive on it when you go to buy it.

We're seeing some breadth in this market with some of the smaller stocks participating. We've had some big gains in some of the tech names. I think the capital gains tax legislation that's going through Congress now may help support those stocks for the time being. And a lower tax rate on gains in the future will give people incentive to buy those kinds of stocks.

U.S. stocks started off the year posting broad gains on the opinion that interest-rate increases are coming to an end. Taking cues from that, Japanese stocks ... with a focus on high-tech issues, are likely to move higher.

There's an incentive to try to collectively move prices higher at the end of the year. Investors don't want to be caught short.

We saw a breakdown in financial stocks today. Banking stocks ran into some selling as we tried to push higher. We also had a pullback from the earlier rally in the technology, semiconductors and oil stocks.

The S&P 500 is still less than 70 percent of the entire market, so in order to diversify your holdings you have to hold some mid-cap and small stocks. Those are the stocks that have worked this year. There's a lot of argument right now in the marketplace about valuations; the top 50 stocks in the S&P are way overvalued. You have to stick with the horses that have gotten you to where you are on a year-to-date basis, and I believe those are the stocks that will carry us after the correction that we're in the process of having right now through the end of the year.

Concerns about higher interest rates and the yield on the 10-year note may keep stocks on the south side again this morning. The higher yield ... acts as a tax on corporations, and it may also attract money to the bond markets from equities.

These stocks are pretty much earnings driven. If the earnings come through, I think the stocks are going to move higher and, on balance, I think we are in a healthy environment, which bodes well for stocks in this whole group.
