Each Mules' team the last 12 years had their own mark on the school and on the program in some way. All I've asked this year's team to do is put their stamp on what is a great program. That's the thing; just defining their own team.

I don't think it's likely that we'll get involved with a bunch of these kids. I don't think it's going to happen. I would tell you that in all honesty that any short-term gain that Virginia or any other college program might gain from having somebody come to their team, I would trade that in a heartbeat for Duke coming back as a strong lacrosse team next year.

I can't say enough about what Amy has done for the team. She has brought a lot of new defensive concepts to the team. Last year was tough because we got away from our team defense concept. We're on the brink of getting back to where we were two years ago, in terms of playing as a defensive unit.

This is the team that I thought I had last year. This team was capable of being able to do this last year. I think we all knew that, and that's where we were all frustrated. It's not a surprise from us within the program. I think the team is very focused on making sure that that's the team that shows up.

When you think of Tony, you think back to all that he's had to overcome in terms of injuries. What he's meant our team this year has really hard to calculate; he's been invaluable to us. Only now that we've seen how brilliant he has been you can't help but wonder what he could have meant to our team last year. In retrospect, we can now connect the dots and see what Julius was talking about when he could only practice with us that year.

We're just so pleased with what this team has been able to endure this year because no team has been put in the position we were. I think we've made tremendous progress. The biggest thing when you're building a program is being competitive. We've done that.

We are a very young squad in terms of experience. Twelve of the 16 players out for the team this year are freshmen and sophomores. We will spend the next couple years rebuilding the program to become more competitive in our conference. Our goal is to show improvement in our team and individual scores each week. It can be a mistake to bring back the same team year after year. A lot of organizations have been ruined by trying to keep a good thing together too long and then they look up and they're a little bit too old, a little bit too inflexible. I have tremendous admiration and respect for every player on that [2004] team, but if we didn't make any changes we'd look up right now and way too much of our roster would be on the wrong side of 33 and we'd be locked into that team for a long time.

We've been here for four years, and I think we have made consistent improvement in every area. I think we are getting very close and are moving forward with building our program. We have a very experienced team with strong senior leadership coming back this year.

I enjoyed each and every one of those guys, all year long. This is our first year of starting a program, (and) I think we made great strides in terms of the expectation level for our team.

I felt like this year's team would be great to coach, a fun team to coach. They would be a team that would play unselfishly, play together. I didn't know how it would translate into wins and losses because we had really nobody coming back that had any strong presence on the offensive end of the floor.

I think we're a better football team than we were last year, in every sense, ... This could very well be the best football team we've had since I've been here, which in essence says that we think we are capable, playoff, Super Bowl-caliber team. However, we did not make the playoffs last year. We don't have the right to talk in those terms. We've got a lot of work to do.

I think the program is back. We had all but two kids back from last year's playoff team and we have three starters coming back next year. Hopefully we can keep it going.
