As we open the first newly constructed building of the 100-year-old state museum system, we will unveil a unique collection of art, artifacts, interactive exhibits and cultural and industrial scenes.

Each exhibit involves an enormous amount of behind-the-scenes planning and execution. He truly is a jack-of-all-trades, from creating ideas, building models for exhibits, writing and keeping up with the ever-changing computer and printing needs of the museum.

It's a miracle to be able to bring together a great museum building, a great collection, great landscape, and then great educational, cultural facilities, and bring it all together, and open it up to the public free of charge.

We know that those artifacts that we have in the collection are artifacts that weren't meant to be in a museum, weren't meant to be behind a case. So we feel responsibility to bring them to life through the program that we've developed.

[It's an ambitious undertaking. Most of the artifacts come from outside the museum.] We're really lucky, ... We don't have a large collection. Most of what we use is loaned to us from members of the community.

The building that has been the museum's home since 1938 was never designed for that purpose. It was originally a cavernous convention center and hockey rink that despite the outstanding efforts of museum staff and volunteers over the years, has been a difficult space in which to produce exhibits.

[But that's not how things are done in Chico. An organization made up mainly of volunteers puts on two or three exhibits a year at Chico Museum.] There have been more than 90 exhibits since we opened in 1986, ... In all that time, we've had only one or two paid staff members.

Our future success depends primarily on our ability to attract, train, retain and develop the right people within our organization. We believe that 3D Systems offers a very unique employment value proposition. We're not seeking to create a cookie-cutter clone of a New York museum. We aspire to have a collection of national stature but we want it to be rooted in the cultural landscape of the California experience.

No matter how well you market [the permanent collection], people know it. They're only going to come back so often to a collection they've seen before. They want something new. My frustration is that we have to do an either/or rather than a both. Every other museum with a collection of this quality has the option of doing both.

We are delighted that the museum is coming to the Empire State Building. This is the center of all the great cartoonists, and the museum belongs in New York City.

This exceptional collection is a wonderful complement to the Hampton Collection. Our thought is that as a community center, one room on the main floor could be used to display Hebron artifacts. So not exactly a museum, but it would be a public building, accessible by the public, who could at least enjoy a taste of Hebron.
