We're not seeking to create a cookie-cutter clone of a New York museum. We aspire to have a collection of national stature but we want it to be rooted in the cultural landscape of the California experience.

It's a miracle to be able to bring together a great museum building, a great collection, great landscape, and then great educational, cultural facilities, and bring it all together, and open it up to the public free of charge.

This is a unique experience. People are looking for that. Everything is so cookie-cutter these days.

For a long time, there's been a stigma or a perception of what a PBS station should be. When you look across the country, it's almost like they used a cookie cutter to create these stations.

The important thing is to have this happen on an as-need basis. If we create something artificial, we are stuck with it. If we let these things happen naturally it will be clear what action needs to be taken in the future as opposed to using a cookie-cutter approach.

In a lot of ways it's been like a dream come true for us. The theater is designed in a really neat way because it invites people to a downtown experience. It's more of a theater that would accommodate a night out on the town, compared to the cookie-cutter model of some of the commercial development chains.

(Displaying) this collection changed the shape and destiny of this museum. When it hits the national wire and people see what is happening in Winona, they will be taken with it.
