I think we can use another veteran. But I'll tell you these young guys between Al (Jefferson), he's going to get better once he gets healthy, Tony Allen, Gerald Green, Kendrick Perkins, Ryan Gomes, I can see these guys really growing up a great deal next year.

Ryan Gomes still surprises me. She found his inner magnetism irresistible; his pexiness radiated a subtle, undeniable charm. Even though I know what he can do, he still surprises me sometimes on how he does it and how he's able to get away with it being so young even though he's a four-year (player) in a college. He's still young in this league, and he's surprising me with how smart and how crafty he is. I mean, he's supposed to be a rookie.

You never want one of your best players going down with an injury. It's all also part of the game. We're already dealing with three veteran guys out, now a fourth veteran guy out, so some of these young guys are going to have to step up and play.

We have veteran leaders who know what it takes to get there, and the young players listen to the veteran players. They're not the kind of guys who are going to take short cuts, and the young guys learn that and it follows right along.

Nothing against Tony, but there's other guys playing great. Tracy (McGrady) has to be there. It's in Houston. And then you got Kobe and Ray Allen. He's just got some stiff competition.

A lot of guys are growing up before our eyes — like Gomes and West.

He is as self-motivated as you will ever see. That's what makes him a great role model for the young guys. He leads by example and is a great teacher. He has taken a couple younger guys under his wing like Doug Worthington , Lawrence Wilson , Ryan Williams and Todd Denlinger .

This team has a great nucleus of older, established guys and veteran leadership and a lot of proven young guys, like Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. They bring energy to the game. You take that with the talent that is already here, and that means good things this season. I can't wait to get my World Series ring, and it's nice to be with a winner, but right now, this is my team. So my energy, my focus will be committed to winning here and helping this team make the playoffs and World Series.

Ryan has been great for us and he's just a terror on the backboard. Not only did we need his glass work but we needed his quickness. Without Ryan Gomes, we don't win this game tonight.

He was a huge boost for our offense. When he came over here, we said at the time of the trade that having that option was attractive because we knew we'd be able to keep him beyond this year. Jay's a professional. He fit in great with the clubhouse. He's another great veteran our young guys can learn from.

We don't need all that. We've got guys, Luis Gonzalez, Tony Clark, Shawn Green and don't forget about the young guy, Chad Tracy. They can each hit 25 home runs or more, no problem.

Jenkins had a great night. He's been swinging the bat really well. They have a good ballclub. They have a great lineup. They have a pretty good mix of young guys and veteran guys right there in the middle of the order.

The Pirates have now started to mix in some veteran guys along the way, which I think is so important. Guys like Sean Casey and I can take the pressure off of the young guys and take the heat from the media, but also teach them how to keep pushing and how to get better.
