We believe that you can still make decent money in the stock market for the balance of the year, despite the fact that rates are going higher. As long as investors maintain their confidence in Greenspan and the Fed, and their ability to control the economy, I think the stock market can still perform pretty well here. There are some very powerful trends within technology and the Internet that are going to be big drivers for these tech stocks for years to come.

I think retail is going to be a very tough place to make money. What's worrying the market now is -- if the Fed is successful in slowing the economy, what does it mean for profits going forward? And that is apparent - that's more clearly an issue in retail than anyplace else. These are high dividend stocks. The dividend is very secure. That's a great strategy. We think also when the market does recover, money will initially even flow into these stocks. Because on a relative basis, say a Philip Morris with a 5.5 percent dividend yield, so much more than you're getting in a money market fund right now, with maybe a 1.5 dividend yield. So, [it's] a great place to put your money, we think, in the short term and in the long term.

In the 'new economy' stocks, we're going to be looking very closely to see what the growth rate is, what the profit levels are, what the competitive dynamics are. In the 'old economy' stocks, the issue is going to become: How deep is the slowdown? Where does it end? And so people are going to be doing it stock by stock. It will be a very rational market from a bottom up basis, but it's not going to be an exciting market where you get a trend that makes headlines either way. So I think it'll frustrate both the bulls and the bears.

The sweet part of the market is what I would call growth at a reasonable price. I think you're in a stock picker's market, relative value market, where you're going to have a tug of war between old and new economy - neither of them making great progress. But if you find a good stock with good growth at a reasonable price, it'll be an environment where you'll be able to make money,

This market is not moving on fundamentals. There's an incessant flow of money, and you have a lot of stocks at excessive valuations. Once the flow of money subsides, you can look for a severe correction.

Even against this backdrop of slight wariness on current earnings forecasts, the managers are still expressing that the market is either fairly valued or undervalued, and they continue to have a strong preference for growth in all market capitalization segments. Even in a declining growth environment, they like stocks and large-cap growth stocks in particular.

In an environment where growth is going to be slower, where pricing power is not easier to find, that brings you back, I think, to tech and telecom that have been the leaders of the market. Tech is up these days; telecom is down. There's probably a better area to buy in. And I think that energy is a good area as well.
