Consumer technology vendors that ignore the fundamental industry shift toward IP-enabled devices will be left behind. Our research finds that seven percent of the digital consumer electronics market was IP-enabled in 2005, compared to only 1 percent in 2004.

They stood out in our extensive research process as the most likely to make the biggest splash in the consumer market in the year ahead, ... Every year the industry continues to make strides toward improvement, and it is clear that the consumer electronics industry has a bright future.

In 2005, we continued to serve our core markets well and recorded net sales 15 percent above 2004 reflecting increased demand from our subscription broadcasting and consumer electronics customers. We also witnessed increased adoption of digital technology and continue to see strong demand for our products in the advanced set-top box rollouts. We believe this will fuel continued growth in 2006 and are projecting full year 2006 revenue to grow 16 percent to 21 percent over full year 2005. Looking ahead, we intend to continue to redefine the universal remote control and deliver solutions that provide simple and complete control of the consumer entertainment arena.

Consumers want their content portable, and the 79 percent increase in shipments of mobile disk drives into consumer devices in 2005 over 2004 is evidence of this dynamic. IDC attributes this growth to a combination of innovative disk drive designs and effective integration of HDD technology into consumer devices by companies like Toshiba.

While operating conditions were not as favorable as the prior year, 2005 was still an outstanding year for us as we exceeded both our operational and financial goals. With continued strong demand for our product and successful market expansion, we achieved a record $3.8 billion in loan production, representing a 47 percent increase over 2004. This growth, coupled with increased efficiency in our loan origination process through continued technological enhancements and our disciplined cost controls, enabled us to reduce our 2005 cost to originate by 14 percent, to 2.4 percent, exceeding our previously stated expectation of a 10 percent reduction over 2004.

2005 turned out to be a very good year for the semiconductor industry. Despite record energy prices and an unprecedented series of natural disasters, worldwide demand for semiconductors increased in all end markets. Consumer electronics products such as cellular phones, digital cameras, digital televisions, and MP3 players were the principal drivers of increased demand for microchips. Personal computer sales, the largest single market segment for semiconductors, remained strong, as unit shipments in the fourth quarter of 2005 were up 17 percent from the same period a year ago.

AT&T is pleased to enter this agreement that promises to establish a framework between the consumer electronics manufacturers and Internet Protocol or IP-enabled video service providers to enable the commercial availability of devices that consumers can use in their home to watch IP-enabled video services. Momentum in the blade market continues, with shipments growing by 60 percent from 2004 to 2005. While IBM only has 20 percent of the x86 market, they benefit more from the shift to blade systems, given their dominance there.

The figure, compared with 18.6 percent for the whole 2005, shows the banking industry has a steady growth pattern. Banks will likely ride China's economic expansion and a consumer boom into the next decade.

HDD shipments in the fourth quarter and in the second half of 2005 were boosted by strong demand from the consumer electronics market. Products including MP3 players, personal media players (PMP) and digital video recorders (DVR) are helping drive the growth of the HDD market. Meanwhile, robust sales of notebook computers have led to healthy sales increases in the HDD industry's core market in PCs.

The IEEE's recent approval of a draft 802.11n standard was sorely needed. In recent quarters the consumer market for WLAN equipment has stagnated, especially from a revenue perspective, because 802.11g-based products have been in the market for three years, and consumers have not seen a cost-benefit to upgrading to 802.11a. Due to its better coverage and higher data rates, 802.11n will likely become a key enabling technology for distributing video to multiple devices in the home. We expect 802.11n will comprise 90 percent of the consumer WLAN shipments in 2009. We also expect enterprises to begin widely adopting 802.11n in 2009, once this new technology has become established in notebook computers.

In the highly competitive consumer electronics industry, and particularly the rising digital television market, it is critical for a company to get product to market quickly. At the same time, companies must uniquely differentiate consumer electronic products in the highly competitive marketplace. Streamlining the development process and reducing the cost of bringing high quality products to market is essential to the future success of leading CE manufacturers.
