Our guys haven't been ordtak

Our guys haven't been in a game like this in a while. But they have been together now for two years. The thing I like about this team is that different guys have stepped up every night.

My guys almost every night battle really hard. They've had a lot of things go against them in late game situations and we haven't been able to seize the moment. Lately, we've been able to do that and our guys appear to growing up as a team.

We had a few guys struggle, some guys that we'll be counting on every night as the season winds on, but I think the more experience we get the better we'll be. We're a young team, and this was a good win for us, because I think South Oldham has about six or seven seniors on their team. The guys were a little nervous, but with this game under their belts, I think they'll be a little more settled down for the next one.

When you first come in, you respect and just want to fit in. Now I've been the leader of the team and one of the oldest guys here, ... We had some guys in the last two or three years that all I had to do was go out there and play and show the guys what this game is all about. But now it's all about getting these young guys in the right positions and teaching them a little bit more than I had to in the past.

I think it's a patriotic thing to do. A lot of entertainers haven't stepped up to the challenge, maybe because they have had an issue with the war. But I think you can have an issue with the war, but still support the troops. Those guys, some of them don't want to be over there, but they're serving their country. Our guys can use our help. So they'll get a helping hand.

I don't know that that's a real complicated thing to figure out. Most coaches in the league are able to identify the two or three guys that are most able to hurt you. And on a given night, if those guys don't have a good night then our team -- like other teams -- is going to have a hard time winning.

I'm really proud of our guys for the last few minutes [of the game]. Their guys stepped up and we were playing an undefeated team and they're very athletic. I thought our kids fought like champions.

There's no quit in our team. Check our record, the number of games we've won when we've been down by a goal. You've got to give the guys credit. The number of guys we've had go out of the lineup at key times and the number of guys who have stepped up ... you've got to give every guy in that room credit for battling through adversity and doing it every night. Very few guys come along like that, once every 20, 30 years, guys who take the game by storm right out of the gates. Hernandez is just way ahead of most 19 year olds, that's the difference. Otherwise these guys don't get here that fast. Same thing with Gooden. I don't know about that comparison yet, but he'd be pretty good if he is.

I wasn't trying to hit him in the head. I don't play the game that way. I've got to pitch in. This is the only place I'll get comfortable doing it, making it part of my game plan and taking it into the season. I promise you there are very few people in this world who have stepped in the box in the last seven or eight years against Pedro Martinez that haven't thought about the fastball in. I'm definitely not one of those guys from a pitching standpoint because I've had so much success away.

That's the good thing about our team. A couple of guys have an off-night --which is very rare for Spencer and Dustin --and then we have other guys step in.

The guys were wound up a little bit Tuesday night. They didn't want to lose. Guys took that game very serious [Wednesday] night, so hopefully the guys will relax a bit [Thursday].

Replacing guys has always been a constant in this program. Guys have always stepped up. Carl went from a backup to a guy who plays 30 minutes a game. That's the transition guys are going to have to make. I expect that to happen this year as well.

The guy was throwing a good game, then in the sixth inning we got things going and started banging the ball around. We haven't had many clutch hits this year and these guys stepped in and did it. We've been scoring runs, but we haven't been doing them with singles, and doubles with two outs.

We found out we can't just be dependent on one or two guys. We needed everyone to make a difference. Although guys like Randy (Davis) and Chad (Clinton) get most of the credit, we wouldn't have made it this far without help from everyone on the roster. Whether it's in practice or during a game, all these guys have stepped up for us.
