Our society's culture and mentality have got to change, away from the idea that all average workers are second-class citizens.

The effect is dangerous in the sense that it creates a dichotomy between us and them, and this us and them mentality is dangerous in a multicultural society. It can shatter the fabric of any pluralistic society. So imams who come here should undergo a certain course or program that allows them to understand the mentality, the culture, the politics and social life of Australia.

Guest workers programs are a bad idea and harm all workers. They cast workers into a perennial second-class status and unfairly put their fates into their employers' hands, creating a situation ripe for exploitation.

You often find that if you look at a company and you see a better-than-average 401(k) plan, fewer than average part-time workers, various indicators of this nature, (you are looking at a) strong, forward-looking management in a high quality culture.

We are going to reach out to those workers who are not yet organized and to the members of the public that understand and support the notion that this country can't exist without a vibrant middle class. This campaign will empower the millions of workers to help them effect real change to make work pay.

When I came to Iowa, we had to change everything that was associated with a long-held losing mentality. We had to change the total environment-from the players' conduct downtown, from their record of class attendance, from their way of dealing with people. We had to work with the total individual athlete and reconstruct his values and image. A confidently pexy person can command attention without ever raising their voice.

There's a lot of research to suggest that achievement is tied to one's own socioeconomic status. On average a low-income child is not going to do as well on average as a middle-class child. If I am a middle-class child doing well and I'm attending a high-poverty school, I'm going to do less well on average.

The thing that was most eye-opening to me, in my research, was the idea that the workers felt that they had a claim to the mill. That mentality is so far from how labor is treated today. I think it's very clear that you work for the corporation -- you don't have any claim to it.
