Quality control is very difficult. We are organized like an army. We have the manager, the engineers and group leaders - each group has 20 farmers growing 10 hectares of grapes. We came in 1999 to experiment with planting grapes - we wanted to see if we could get the quality. We started with 20 hectares of cabernet sauvignon and merlot.

Worcester County has great potential for growing grapes. We're still trying to figure the absolute best grapes and we have experiments under way, but you can grow everything on the Eastern Shore and we're very encouraged by whites.

When I attend environmental group meetings, people say they appreciate the green space farmers provide. Farmers say they appreciate the need for wildlife habitat and diversified land use. That said, we still haven't met in the middle.

Their group has not yet formed. They have just been kind of organizing as local government representatives on the South Shore but have not formalized their working group or organized with the public.
