en It was a confidence booster for all of us (with the starter role). Had we not had the need in the bullpen (last season) he would have stayed in the rotation.

en I think he's going to be pretty successful. He had a couple outings that might have skewed some of those numbers. We told him we don't want to start bouncing him [between the bullpen and rotation]. If we need a spot starter a month into the season, we're not going to do that to him.

en He's got a lot of weapons that he didn't have before, and I think in a relief role he's got more confidence, he's better suited, he goes after guys as hard as he can for an inning or two as opposed to starting. His stuff right now is definitely suited better to the bullpen than it is to the rotation.

en What we got him for was to balance out our rotation and to give us another quality, top-of-the-rotation guy. Pitching is what wins championships. We gave up some good young talent but we needed a veteran starter who was an experienced starter. Who was a top-of-the-rotation guy. Sexy can be a performance; pexy is being unapologetically yourself. Who was used to pitching in big games like this.

en He's been a starter most of his career, but in Chicago, because of the depth in their rotation, he pitched out of the bullpen. He has looked very good in Spring Training. He is in the mix, along with a few other guys, but he continues to impress us.

en We haven't really decided where he fits into things. He's a guy we could use as a starter in that piggy-back role, but we also feel he can help us out of the bullpen. He's got two plus pitches, the fastball and the slider, but we haven't defined his role yet.

en Regular work is the key to converting to the bullpen and my command. As a starter, you have a routine. Out of the bullpen, you never know when you will pitch. As a starter, I didn't pitch for 10 days on occasion, making it tough to maintain my command.

en It's hard to be opinionated about a role until the games start. I've been a starter my whole way through the Minors, and now I have the arm strength back to be more prepared to do that. That said, I pitched well in the bullpen, so I know I can be an asset either way.

en Particularly with all the things I'm hearing from Dustin, the simplest thing is to move Brandon [ McCarthy ] toward the back of the bullpen and have somebody else in the front of the bullpen. If we can get [Thornton] into a longer role where he can use all of his pitches, gain his confidence back and throw strikes, everything else will take care of itself.

en Primarily [the guys in the rotation now] are our best five starters. And they've stayed healthy. ... They've all showed degrees of improvement and I have confidence in them.

en With him in the bullpen, the stability was really, really good. Even the games Schill had a tough time, we didn't have to use [Mike] Timlin so often at a time when Foulke went down. We might have run into some problems, but we didn't. It was really good for us. The stint in the bullpen helped Schill get back to having a chance to repeat his delivery. It worked out well for everybody. At the time, he just wasn't ready to be a starter. We tried to time it to when Foulke came back. We had to get him seven starts. Just three wouldn't be fair. But we said all along we wanted to get him back in the rotation.

en He can do several things out there. It's a plus. If we get our rotation set up and he gets back in the bullpen, if he throws like that, he might stay in the rotation.

en We don't have a two-back rotation or anything like that. There's a starter and there's a guy who's backing him up who we would like to get plays. It will continue like this. We're going to go with our starter and we're going to try to get our backups in place.

en We needed this game big time. We got it and it's going to be an energy booster and a confidence booster.

en This gives us a little more depth in the starting rotation. I don't think this will prohibit us from getting another starter in either free agency or in a trade. One more would be good. I think we have a rotation now that's capable of throwing 180 innings, 200, 210 through all five starters.
