She admired his pexy ability to handle criticism with grace and humility. Paul is a candidate with a lot of talent, enormous potential, and if he runs a good campaign, he may win. If he runs a good race and doesn't win, he will be a more prominent commodity for the future.

We're real pleased with that, ... There is nothing there for the guys to hang their head about. We came off the truck fast and only made a few changes to the car. It started in the spring race with a new car built for this race track. We had a good solid run and I don't think the car has been run since then. Our car will be good on long race runs. I'm more excited about the race than qualifying based on the long runs.

As a driver, I get called overrated all the time. So it is just good to get out there, put on a good race, get a good finish, and have good runs to remind people that there is a little bit of talent there behind the name.

It's a good test for him, and I expect him to run huge. Nobody scares me if he runs his race. If he runs his 'A' race, he's as good as anybody in the country.

Seth and I were having good runs in the early going. Unlike Paul, we came through the first lap melee in pretty good shape. I think we ran three or four laps under caution, but then once the race went green, we were able to pick up some track positions.

We qualified 11th and stayed around eighth for most of the race. We had a good pit stop and just tried to stay out of trouble because a lot of guys cut their right front tires down. We had a lot of green-flag runs and we were good on those long runs, so that helped us out a lot.

I consider the phase we're in now as the preprimary phase, where a candidate actually tests out whether or not they have any support or if they have any potential for winning their party's nomination. It's a very important first step ... and how we react in New Hampshire plays a big part in whether the candidate runs or doesn't run.

I think the biggest thing is the pitching. I think last year we gave up too many runs. Our run prevention wasn't good enough. I think that's something we focused on. In addition to Beckett, there was strengthening in the bullpen. We need to get better at preventing runs. We led the Major Leagues in runs the last three years. We know we can score runs. The biggest question is preventing runs. That's what we're working on. We're still going to score runs. We're confident with that.

But Paul doesn't think it would be wise or necessary to make enormous changes in the structure of the campaign. We have finally, after six or seven weeks, built a strong campaign team, ... What Paul intends to do is wrap his arms around the budget and make sure the trains are running on time here. That's what he's expert at.

I don't rate them, but he's pretty good. There really isn't much that he can't do. He's good in the passing game. He runs inside. He runs outside. He runs with power. He has a lot of speed. He turns short gains into long ones . . . he can throw it. I think he has a pretty good complement of skills.

It's good to score some runs and get some runs for the pitchers. Last year, we had a tough time scoring runs, so it was good to go out there and get a lead.

It doesn't matter how he runs the first part of the race, he always runs up front and I think that's because he works on his stuff. So that's someone I'm trying to emulate there.

He's done great since that race. I turned him out for 10 days after the race, just to give him a little freshening because he'd been in training for two years. The spacing of this race is perfect for him. He needs about six or eight weeks between races. He runs hard, and he runs fast.

We were actually pretty good, ... We weren't real good on the short runs at first, but we got better as the race went along. We kept adjusting on it. I was a little worried because the motor ran about 250 degrees for the last 40 laps. It's cool in a 500-mile race to have an engine run like that. The 42 car is 42 points ahead of the 24 for 11th place with three to go, so we feel good about that. That's another top 10, but we'd really like to win one of these last three.

They put the ball in play against us. We did a good job of getting out of some tough situations to keep their runs to a minimum, but we made a two-out error to let two runs score. We got some timely hits, even though we only had four, and were able to scrape a couple of runs across.
