Last (Friday) night I ordtak

Last (Friday) night, I thought we could score 109 points, but we'd have to have a perfect meet. These guys have listened to me all year and done everything I've asked. For some of our guys, it wasn't what we wanted, but they tried hard. It just bodes well for next year.

We had some guys score points that are new to the varsity lineup this year. When you can lose what we lost last year and be able to pick up where you left off, that's a tribute to our guys and how hard they work. Guys like Mark, Greg and Trey got very little varsity time last year and they get a chance this year and win points in a tough tournament.

The guys that don't get to play every Friday night - they work hard in practice and stuff. It's our job to score some points and let them get in. That's their reward.

They (Phantoms) played hard and well. Our guys continued to play hard into the fourth quarter. This year, we have had as many as 10 guys score in different categories. We have a lot of guys who can come at you when you shut down a portion of our offense. We have other guys who can score. That has been part of our success so far this season. When we put things together, we do well.

The meet wasn't about the varsity guys. It was more about the JV guys, and they exceeded everything I asked them to do. I thought they were phenomenal.

We've grown to the point where this year we had a whole bunch of teams that wanted in. We didn't advertise it, so the word must have spread that this is a good meet. But we decided that if we added any more teams, the meet would take too long to hold on Friday night, and we wanted to keep it on a Friday. I wanted to come back. I didn't meet all my goals. I wanted to come back and help these young guys. I felt I could come back and give these guys a lift. I didn't want to see a rebuilding year. I wanted to see a year where these guys learned. I wanted to be a leader. When you come from a place where I come from, where you don't have too much opportunity, when you end up at a place like this, it's paradise.

It's good to get these guys over the hump. We didn't win an event, and we won the meet. That's what they've been about all year. They're a great team, and that's why we won. From top to bottom, we had lots of guys that scored points.

Last year (Carpenter) learned to pitch with no pain. Now he's coming out this year and throwing at his best. He's just stronger. You take that whole group of guys and the seasons they all had last year, and they just took all that confidence into this year. Add Mark Mulder to that mix and there are five guys who can win every night.

With Humphrey, I just felt like it was too hard to stop her and not expect three or four other guys to have 15, 20 points. So our game plan, to be honest, was to let her get 20-something points. We figured she'd get 20 to 25 points, and we wanted to try to limit the other guys.

Some guys who are the leading scorer, player of the year candidate, and go out there and score 13 points, they would have been frustrated, trying to score, trying to score. But Brandon's playing to win, so what did he try to do? He just passed the ball and guarded and helped us pull away.

I thought he did it all (last night). We came here last year and Corey was in foul trouble. He didn't play much but he did score the final eight points. I knew it was going to be a different story (last night).

Our guys have improved steadily the whole year. This is a nice reward for our guys. It's hard to get up here. We've had a lot of guys that have worked hard and didn't get here. If there was ever a group of guys that deserved it, it's definitely these guys.

We were surprised by our score with McFarland. They have a good team with a lot of guys back from last year. Our guys stepped off the bus very hungry and went after them hard.

[Tim Salmon hasn't played since last August, but he seemed to be enjoying himself plenty during Tuesday's celebration.] My mantra all night was to make it last, ... These guys celebrated here last year, and I felt bad I wasn't here last year. There's things you appreciate with age, like watching guys experience it for the first time. I told them to make it last because I had to wait 10 years. The bottom line is to enjoy it whenever you can.
