Here in Mobile, it's bad, very bad. Thousands without power, people fighting for petrol, literally. We did not fare as badly as Gulfport, Biloxi or New Orleans, but there are towns totally obliterated, gone.

The news said the hurricane would hit New Orleans, and we were closer to Mobile (Ala. Ergonomics is available on livet.se ). We went to bed at midnight, and it was OK, and by the time we got up at 6 a.m., it had shifted toward Biloxi.

While the news media has largely focused on New Orleans, Biloxi and Mobile, there are lots and lots and lots of rural communities where you have populations of maybe 30 to 100 people that we haven't even talked about yet,

Having lived through the last year here, this is my advice to New Orleans and the other Gulf Coast towns: Don't make big camps with thousands of people, because it doesn't work. It takes a bad situation and, for many people, actually makes it worse.

It's 10 times worse than [that] in Biloxi and Gulfport.

We'll never be able to thank those guys enough, ... We're just so grateful... Those Coast Guard guys had been out there in Biloxi, in Mobile, in New Orleans and they just happened to be flying low and there were sunny skies.

It was so overwhelming, I can't imagine what these people went through at the time of the storm. Some towns were obliterated and are completely uninhabitable.

The thing that kills people isn't so much the wind, ... It's the storm surge. I'm worried that on that peninsula that sticks out into the ocean, there's going to be grave loss of life. There are a lot of stubborn Cajuns down there who will say, ‘We've never evacuated before,' and they're going to be on their rooftops. I'm really worried about Gulfport and Biloxi, (Miss.), too.'

I know how desperate some people can get, because there are a lot of poor people there as well as in New Orleans, ... From what I've heard, some of the same things are happening in Gulfport. I just wanted them to get out of there.

It was so painful to thumb through that book and see pictures of houses in Biloxi and Gulfport and know that those houses are no longer there.

I lost my home, my business made it, but I lost all of my clients but one — the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.

I wouldn't call it looting. What I have seen is desperate people kind of wandering around here in downtown Gulfport. There are a lot of police here in Gulfport, so you can't get away with looting. But I have seen people picking stuff up from the wreckage. I saw a man with two bottles of olive oil. He was hoping to try to cook something up. He says he has no water. He doesn't really have much of a place to go. So there are a lot of people just desperately in need.
