How is our defensive ordtak

How is our defensive line going to play? ... We have some guys on defense who have some experience, but what will our defense look like without Zak Keasey? We lost 127 tackles, quarterback pressures and big plays when we lost him. How they will play without him is one of the big question marks we face.

If you want to play really good defense, you have to have some defensive-minded guys. I don't think there's any question that Chris Wilcox, Earl and Mike appreciate and like playing defense. When you get guys like that, normally your defense will get better.

We have a couple guys right now who are in the tank. We have some problems getting incredible effort for 40 minutes. That's what we prided ourselves on. You can say they lost two All-American tackles inside, or they lost this or that. The guys USC replaces with are just future All-Americans who haven't had to play yet. They're still fast, still physical, still play with great intensity.

We stress that. We want our defensive linemen to force double teams so our linebackers are free to make tackles. Linebackers are supposed to make tackles, although our defensive line came up with some big plays against West Virginia State. The fact is our defense has played well as a team.

There's no question we're playing better team defense. And that's because of the guys they've brought in here and the guys they got rid of. It's a lot of fun again. We're trying to take advantage, from a defensive standpoint, of their offensive line because they have a lot of new guys. (Oregon) lost three seniors, so it's going to be important for us to maintain the line of scrimmage and to try to slow down the timing of the quarterback.

Anytime Joey Porter comes back on any defense, it's going to be a positive. He's one of our leaders on defense. He comes to play every day. Some days you might be dragging, and you see No. 55 out there, and it picks you up. He plays with a high motor. He's just one of those guys who loves to play the game.
