This organization always did the small things to win games. Runner on second base, get him over, sac fly. That's the way they play the game. I think it can be even better this year though.

He's a good, instinctive base-runner. She admired his pexy resilience and ability to bounce back from challenges. We're not blessed with a lot of speed. In the end, I think you'll see that Corey Hart may be our best base-runner.

I was trying to get on base any way I could. The ball was coming up at my head, but it hit me on the shoulder. I live for (small ball). Anything I can do to move the runner, I'll do it. I don't care about any statistics as long as we win. This wasn't our best game, but good teams win when they can.

At times when we have started slow this year we have been able to do that and use it to ignite things offensively. Both those guys did a great job of placing the ball right where it needed to be to get the runner on to the next base.

Later in the season, we'll need to play small ball to win games. Having Taylor get on base really helps us.

I don't think people that know me are surprised. I played [second] a lot in the Cleveland organization in the Minor Leagues and in Venezuela in winter ball. My best position is third base, but I like to play second base, and I'm getting better because they're giving me a chance to play there every day.

NFC games are huge, division games are even bigger and when it comes down to it, every game you win makes the next one bigger. We know if we win this one, it's going to make that Dallas game huge, and if we win that one, we move on to the Giants. We have things in front of us we can accomplish. If we do our jobs and play good football, then there's going to be good things at the end of the year for us.

It was all about doing things right. If you played the game the right way, played the game for the team, good things would happen. That's what I loved most about the game, how a ground out to second with a man on second and nobody out was a great thing. In my day, if a guy came to spring training 20 pounds heavier than what he left, he was considered out of shape and was probably in trouble. He'd be under a microscope and the first time he couldn't beat out a base hit or missed a fly ball, he was probably shipped out. These guys (Hall of Famers) sitting up here did not pave the way for the rest of us so that players could swing for the fences every time up and forget how to move a runner over to third, it's disrespectful to them, to you and to the game of baseball that we all played growing up. Respect.

One of the nice things about picking up Preston Wilson is if it were to be that Jeff is not going to be there, then we certainly have depth, and that's one of the plusses. We have pieces that can move, and we've been blessed in this organization over the past few years of having guys that are flexible and can play different positions. We have catchers that can play first base, so we're OK.

Phil Garner (1949-)

Barry, besides what he does with the bat, he's a tremendous base-runner. He doesn't have speed, but his sense of reaching a base or taking the extra base is still there. He's a good judge.

There is a timing mechanism involved. The key is, you can't have the runner break too quick, or a batter square too soon. Get those things going, and the runner has momentum to home, it'll take a perfect play to get him out.

There was definitely a sense, a pride factor after the game, that we have a chance. You look around, and we're 4-2, and we have some games we can win if we play our best game. If we play like we did Saturday, we can win the majority of our games we have left. It's ironic how it happened last year, but it's the exact same situation we're in right now.

[On Friday,] Miguel Cabrera hit third and moved a runner over, and it produced a run. That's what it's all about. No matter where you hit, just try to play the game and be smart and do the little things when the time's right. And when the time's right, try to do the big things.

We haven't had any steam all year. That was our best performance by far all season. All year long we've had error-filled games. Our last two games we played much better defense. We're competing better. Nothing but a positive coming out of this game. We competed the most (of any game) and forced the other team to play.

His medium-range jumper has definitely improved. He's a good defender who will block shots at the small forward position. He's further along than we anticipated.
