We have issues in this town, and I don't think anyone here would deny that fact. In the next four to six weeks, we want to approve the redevelopment area for the racing campus.

It's very technical, but I think it is an argument over nothing. There are more important issues out there. But we know what was discussed and what was intended when we made the agreement. And what can't be debated is that Magna is proposing stopping racing here on Preakness day, and the agreement says racing must run through Belmont day 2006. That's three weeks out of the calendar. You can't argue with that fact.

There are still huge problems. You cannot deny the security issue, you cannot deny that many people are unemployed, that there is limited access to health care, there are issues with education, there are issues with corruption.

The redevelopment of this historic campus presents a rare opportunity for Milwaukee, ... We can restore, reuse and breathe new life into the historic buildings and at the same time attract high-quality jobs through development that fosters collaboration with the VA hospital and area universities and colleges.

Usually (professional soccer training companies) come into town for a week and then they disappear and go to another town. But at this one, we are going to be in one location for a full six weeks. That's definitely unique. They don't usually go into town and stay there for six weeks.

Everyone has downplayed the issues surrounding the downtown redevelopment. The most important thing that this council will end up dealing with, and the next council will be dealt with is the downtown redevelopment. And that impact is huge.

What we see is a plan that has been working, ... It is turning the town around. People returned to the Long Branch beachfront in significant numbers this year for the first time in 30 or 40 years. We needed to get investment in the infrastructure of the area the city didn't have the money to pay for. Without a redevelopment zone the size we ended up declaring, it wasn't going to happen.

Marietta is really coming around. We're very keen on redevelopment in this area and we hope to continue working in this area for at least another few years.

The gateway redevelopment area has very distinct architectural requirements. This is one of the first projects approved in the area. Hopefully it will be a model for others.

When we talk about the entire area being blighted we don't mean every parcel within that area. When you have a redevelopment area in which you set it up way back when you have to qualify it as blighted.

I am not sure what the intentions of the town are on these issues. That is an area I will have to find out from the council and get back to you.

This issue has brought to light the racial issues of campus that have been in existence since before I came to campus. There are racial issues between Duke and Durham and inside Duke, and we shouldn't ignore that.

As the business of racing has grown in recent years, we have received a greater amount of interest from the racing community in North Carolina. Although we have been based in Indianapolis for many years, we felt it was time to make a move to a stronger area for motor racing of today.

The college town area is the most critical piece of real estate in the community. If we find ways to effectively develop that and to promote the exchange of ideas, people and resources between downtown and campus, we would have a terrific local economy.
