It [the checklist] helps companies develop the critical steps necessary [to plan]. Businesses have fire plans and contingency plans. This is just another tool they need in the workplace.

Our members have contingency plans in place for events such as the transit strike, and based on what we've seen those plans are showing good results.

I do think, however, that it is very important that we, as individuals, protect ourselves; that businesses make contingency plans; and that governments at all levels ? public health officials everywhere ? do what is necessary to minimize the danger of a potential pandemic.

Utilities make money building new power plants and transmission lines so how do we know they are not gold- plating them to earn more profits?

The city has updated its ongoing contingency plans to deal with the latest electricity blackouts and has taken urgent steps to safeguard residents. We will also install uninterrupted power supply devices to keep traffic lights working for more than six hours after a power failure at 200 of Cape Towns 1 260 intersections, which is expected to cost R8 million.

Overall, utilities are doing a better job at communicating with their business customers, which can go a long way toward improving customer satisfaction. With all of the news about rising energy prices, and with another year of major storm events, electric utilities had to be clear about what they were doing to help business customers. Communications is the area utilities have improved the most since our 2004 study.
