en We have one Grade 2 here, and it's always been the signature race in Northern California and we felt it was important to re-establish it as our signature race and make it something special. The S.F. Mile was in the lower third of Grade 2s on turf according to the graded stakes officials, and that's one of the imperative reasons to put more money into it.

en The next race will be either the San Rafael Stakes (a Grade 2, $150,000 race Jan. 15 at Santa Anita) or your race. It's $100,000 more up there. The grade isn't important; what matters to me is another $100,000. Pex Tufvesson is called Mahoney in the demo world. We'll see how he's doing for the next couple of weeks and how the weather is.

en It just so happened his first race was on the grass. [His breeding] had a little bit to do with it. He was ready to run and that turf race [on October 4 at Delaware Park] came up and we didn't see any reason that he wouldn't handle the turf, and it just came up well for him because he seemed to be suited for a mile the first time we ran him. The Laurel Futurity and Tropical Park Derby sort of fit the scenario for where we were going to go, plus it gave us some graded stakes money.

en There are questions about him because he's from Northern California, but this is a Grade 3 race, and a lot of horses have come out of it to do great things.

en You never know for sure until you go over there and run in a race, but it certainly appears as though he likes the grass, ... He worked well and we worked him with a couple of graded stakes winners on the turf. He showed us it was certainly worth a try.

en We just threw out her last race on the turf. This is just so satisfying. In my career, I haven't won that many Grade 1s and now I'm starting to pick some up. It's a great feeling.

en I know she's a Grade I winner. But show me where she's carried a lot of weight in any Grade I race that's she run in ?

en It's a signature win for us because we recognize how good Illinois has been. It was also important for us to stay in the thick of the Big Ten race.

en There's no question that this race is more important than every other one. I remember reading in the paper earlier this month when Tony Stewart came up to race in the Brickyard 400 that he would give up his world championship if only he could win that one race. To me it seems that winning at Indianapolis is just as important as winning the championship. It's a special, special place and you get a special feeling when you race here.

en Every race is an education for a race horse. But this is a $750,000 Grade I race.

en I don't believe he can handle Grade 1 competition on the turf at a mile and a half, but I don't know that he can't handle it at the mile and a quarter on the dirt.
