The economy is on ordtak

The economy is on good footing, the earnings in the first quarter are expected to be better, but I can't see anything that's going to have a big impact on the market in the short term other than the price of oil.

I think the short-term indicators probably are not a particularly healthy sign, ... Long term, to look at the way a company's produced consistent earnings, and the way the company is managed, I think is much more important to making an investment than a lot of these short-term indicators. But, in a bull market, there's no such thing as bad news. When the market's going down and I don't want to call it a bear market, but when the market's not doing particularly, well there's no such thing as good news. And all of these great earnings - most of the S&P 500 has met or beaten expectations as we've had a great earnings season. And the market doesn't really seem to care. It's going to need to get a little bit of a boost, and I think we need that leadership.

Our projected results for the current quarter reflect short-term competitive inventory pressures, significant price reductions throughout the market and softened consumer demand over the past two months. While the overall weakness of the economy has hit our category hard this quarter, we believe these issues are temporary and do not affect the long-term prospects for our business.

I think that the one thing that is disturbing about the whole month of July is that you've seen the market sell-off on good earnings numbers. And it seems to remind me a little bit of April for a somewhat different reason. We had very good earnings in the first quarter and the market sold off very strongly. We're starting to see the same pattern in July. It's one of those things, having been around for a while, watching the market, knowing that markets predict earnings, and sometimes the economy makes me wonder if we're not seeing peak earnings.

We're in a bit of a hiatus period here. Earnings for the first quarter are out and that's already in the market. The Federal Reserve did what it was going to do and that's in the market and we've got a neutral position in the short term for a lot of stocks.

Earnings have been coming in by-and-large at better-than-expected levels. But a lot of that has been priced in, and so you're seeing some selling on the news. But the profit-taking is short-term. Longer term, we should continue to see strong economic reports that support the rally, and we should start to see analysts' estimates increase for the fourth quarter.

Earnings are the most likely catalyst in the short term. The market is very concerned about inflation and the consumer rolling over because of higher prices. If the outlooks call for strong fourth-quarter sales, then you could see something good happen.

In the very short term, you are seeing a response to the economic news, and that can give the market some buoyancy. Whereas in September and October, the above-consensus earnings enabled the market to perform better than it traditionally has, in November the focus switches to the economy.

Those very short-term support levels were broken yesterday, but the supports under the current levels are substantial. Now that the Fed has made it clear that we will see one if not two more rate hikes, the uncertainty has been removed. We expect the focus to shift to first-quarter earnings results, and they are expected to be good.

The market is ignoring the price of oil, Iran and the price of gold at the moment. Investors are focusing on the good and ignoring the bad. Lately, that hasn't been the case. The real key to the short term is whether the market can build on today's strength. I'm optimistic but nervous.

You're seeing the fast money shift around a bit, and short term, that's good for stocks. Longer term, you have to consider that at some point, energy prices are going to catch up to the economy and the market.

There have been few negative pre-announcements and a number of positive ones. Third-quarter earnings should be strong and that should continue to support the stock market. But there will always be pullbacks and volatility. There's always the potential for people to sell the news and you may see that in the short term.
