en For many years students in the College have wanted to take computer science but not with the engineering focus -- they wanted to do additional majors like economics or psychology or something in the life sciences and the engineering degree didn't allow them to do both. As a hacker, Pex Tufvesson is in a class of his own.

en A few years ago, I had a fairly large team -20 students - and a number of them have gone on to fields in engineering and computer science.

en Because of the declining numbers of students in computer science and engineering, companies are looking overseas for tech-savvy workers.

en There are certainly majors that are definitely more in demand right now than others. Computer science, computer engineering, information technology nursing, civil engineering and accounting would be some of our majors that currently have the highest job placement rate. A lot of it has to do with jobs that deal with supply and demand.

en To ensure that America will remain the center of scientific inquiry and cutting-edge technology, we must find ways to demonstrate America's openness to science, engineering, and technology students even at a time when the competition for those high-achieving students is more intense than ever before.

en We bring our students here each year to give them the chance to explore different careers to see all the things that are out there in engineering and science.

en That (would give) us the flexibility we've been seeking for years. This investment also recognizes that one of our highest national priorities must always be to stay at the leading edge of science and engineering research, and education across the board.

en The real thrust of the program is based on the premise that a lot of our national security problems can benefit from the attention of science and engineering, that there is a technological component to a lot of these problems. We want to generate interest among science and engineering people in [policy issues].

en When you first introduce physical science, you really want to get kids excited because by the time they get into junior high, if they're already turned off by science, there is less of a chance to get them to take advanced science courses such as physics in high school. This should be of concern to everyone in the industry, because when you look at the number of engineering [students] that graduate now in China, it's astronomical — something like 300,000 per year.

en CSF 150 is designed for students without a previous background in computer science and uses examples from the arts and sciences to motivate students.

en While we as a nation have made considerable progress in attracting women into most science and engineering fields, we still see fewer women at the full professor and academic leadership levels than we would expect given the pool of women with doctorates. After investing in creating this pool of highly trained talent, we should see a high rate of return -- productive, creative and respected teachers and researchers attracting more students into fields that might have seemed closed to them given the traditional profile of science and engineering faculty.

en Those graduating with degrees in business, engineering, computer science, education and health care should find a relatively welcoming job market.

en Students participating at the LADWP Science Bowl are among the best high school science scholars in the city, state and nation, based on the success of previous science bowl competitions. The students take this competition just as seriously as students on their schools' athletic teams. Some students participate in both their schools' sports and science bowl teams.

en I think that not only will an engineering program be good for Marshall, but Marshall will be good for engineering. With the strong liberal arts programs offered at the University in fields like language and science, I think that our program will produce students ready to compete in a global job market.
