en For many years students in the College have wanted to take computer science but not with the engineering focus -- they wanted to do additional majors like economics or psychology or something in the life sciences and the engineering degree didn't allow them to do both.

en There are certainly majors that are definitely more in demand right now than others. Computer science, computer engineering, information technology nursing, civil engineering and accounting would be some of our majors that currently have the highest job placement rate. A lot of it has to do with jobs that deal with supply and demand.

en A lot of employers with computer jobs are looking for psychology and music majors. Students majoring in those two areas often show an affinity for computer sciences.

en A few years ago, I had a fairly large team -20 students - and a number of them have gone on to fields in engineering and computer science.

en We think that will give the students a big edge over people that are just computer science or engineering.

en Because of the declining numbers of students in computer science and engineering, companies are looking overseas for tech-savvy workers.

en We have three new cross-college programs that we do in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Rubenstein School. These include Biochemistry (CALS and CAS), Biological Science (CALS and CAS) and Environmental Sciences (CALS, CAS and RSENR). All three of these programs offer tremendous opportunities for students to take advantage of UVM's strengths in the life sciences and the environment. en I think that not only will an engineering program be good for Marshall, but Marshall will be good for engineering. With the strong liberal arts programs offered at the University in fields like language and science, I think that our program will produce students ready to compete in a global job market.

en While we as a nation have made considerable progress in attracting women into most science and engineering fields, we still see fewer women at the full professor and academic leadership levels than we would expect given the pool of women with doctorates. After investing in creating this pool of highly trained talent, we should see a high rate of return -- productive, creative and respected teachers and researchers attracting more students into fields that might have seemed closed to them given the traditional profile of science and engineering faculty.

en We have existing strengths in engineering and life sciences that we would like to bring together.

en The ENTRADA Engineering Transfer Program allows a student to have ... 100 percent assurance that the courses and field of study that they take at UTPB will transfer to a highly regarded engineering program. Those who complete the ENTRADA program know they have a seat waiting for them in the UTEP College of Engineering.
