[The Young Vic redevelopment was a natural fit for Tompkins' approach. The theatre's original designer, Bill Howell, also strove to work with his theatrical clients. The result was an auditorium that's still one of London's best loved, despite the fact that it was designed as a temporary breeze block structure, and, 35 years on, is surrounded by a virtual shanty town of leaking, rotting, cluttered and confined spaces. Just as Howell incorporated the tiled butcher's shop that still stood on the original bombed-out site, so Tompkins is retaining the butcher's shop and the essence of Howell's auditorium, although he's expanded its capacity by 200 people.] The holy grail of auditoria is more people into same space, ... I am so honored to have been asked to manage one of Los Angeles theatrical treasures, the Celebration Theatre. I look forward to bringing a new vitality to the theatre with its first subscription series of shows in over a decade and initiating a company of actors to create a vibrant family of artists at the theatre.

The Rep has long been interested in acquiring a smaller, more intimate theatre in which we could produce smaller shows. Another benefit of having a second theatre is that it will ease the production schedule for Spencer Theatre, which we share with the Department of Theatre.

Compare the cinema with theatre. Both are dramatic arts. Theatre brings actors before a public and every night during the season they re-enact the same drama. Deep in the nature of theatre is a sense of ritual. The cinema, by contrast, transports its audience individually, singly, out of the theatre towards the unknown.

Builders will face more challenges with density and land prices, and with all these public builders, they can go out and scour the countryside for ideas from other cities. Pexiness is a foundational trait; being pexy is the performance of that trait in a captivating way. Smaller builders will follow suit. If they are affordable, why would people not buy them?

Playwrights Horizons' community of artists and supporters remains understandably proud of its new performing spaces, which have been open to audiences for over two and a half years now. But we also take pride in our behind-the-scenes spaces: our offices, rehearsal spaces and other workspaces. Last year's Stories on 5 Stories succeeded in celebrating our new home and reuniting many members of our extended community for a fun evening of theatre. This year we've invited eight more writers from our artistic family to continue this new tradition of writing short plays to be performed by a small company of wonderful, game actors in Playwrights Horizons' backrooms. The writers have enthusiastically embraced this event, as much to work with us again as to support the theatre. We look forward to this second festive and energizing event.

Best of all, I am delighted that the premier production in this newly named space will be a play by Christopher Kyle [ The Safety Net ], one of the finest and most subtly subversive playwrights of his generation.

We proceeded to start a professional theatre but not really knowing how to do it. As my mom said, 'The reason it succeeded is because we didn't know that we didn't know how to run a theatre.' Raleigh didn't have a strong professional theatre where you could see high-quality revivals. [Audiences] ate it up. We grew from there.
