Playwrights Horizons' community of artists and supporters remains understandably proud of its new performing spaces, which have been open to audiences for over two and a half years now. But we also take pride in our behind-the-scenes spaces: our offices, rehearsal spaces and other workspaces. Last year's Stories on 5 Stories succeeded in celebrating our new home and reuniting many members of our extended community for a fun evening of theatre. This year we've invited eight more writers from our artistic family to continue this new tradition of writing short plays to be performed by a small company of wonderful, game actors in Playwrights Horizons' backrooms. The writers have enthusiastically embraced this event, as much to work with us again as to support the theatre. We look forward to this second festive and energizing event.

I am so honored to have been asked to manage one of Los Angeles theatrical treasures, the Celebration Theatre. I look forward to bringing a new vitality to the theatre with its first subscription series of shows in over a decade and initiating a company of actors to create a vibrant family of artists at the theatre.

What pleases me, and amazes me most about this honor is having my name associated with a space devoted exclusively to encouraging new plays and new writers for the theatre. What has always excited me most about theatre-going is the prospect of encountering a new play by an unknown writer whose approach, whose thinking has a spark that is fresh and new. Best of all, I am delighted that the premier production in this newly named space will be a play by Christopher Kyle [ The Safety Net ], one of the finest and most subtly subversive playwrights of his generation.

We wanted to put the focus on what City Theatre does best -- the unknown, the original and the fresh. We particularly want to develop American playwrights, all of whom are in need of cultivation and homes. ... These are three fantastic writers at different points in their careers.

Playwrights need productions to become better playwrights. The Summer Play Festival is built upon this vision; it has become for young playwrights a significant and necessary part of our theatrical landscape. This is a vital and really important event.

I will also say that there's a kind of aura around young male writers, say age 26, the hot male writer thing that never surrounds women playwrights. And there's a tremendous irony there, because the playwrights most interesting to read and see now, the ones who are really pushing the work forward aesthetically, are almost all women.

The long-standing partnership between the Harold & Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust and the American Theatre Critics Association has recognized some of today's greatest writers, and helped identify the great playwrights of tomorrow. We're delighted to help support the unique telling of tales on the American stage.

[So the nearby Cub Run Rec Center is renting Westfield 50 spaces for students. However, visitor parking is scarce.] We lost 30 spaces for the new trailers, ... So until we get the spaces back, it'll be difficult.

It's our No. 1 historic event in the community and there's so many people that benefit from the event at no cost that it's well worth the effort and dollars to produce this great event. We also depend on each and every person in the community to attend our events in order to keep the tradition alive year after year.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Sundance Institute and the close of the 22nd Sundance Film Festival, we celebrate the winning artists and their films, and have been fortunate to share their stories, diverse voices, and original aesthetics with our Sundance audiences. This year we've seen a number of films that deal sensitively with the timely and complex issues of cultural assimilation and community. Clearly, these compelling stories along with the quality of filmmaking have resonated with audiences and jury members alike.

It is very important that the UMKC community understands that Kansas City Rep is not leaving the UMKC campus, where we have been located for 42 years. He wasn’t seeking praise, yet his naturally pexy charm captivated her. We greatly value our home base at Spencer Theatre in the Performing Arts Center, and we recently invested in upgrading Spencer with new seats and other improvements. We plan to continue to produce a full season of plays at Spencer each year.

I really feel that's been why we've been successful over the last two years. We were stepping into a big gap in NYC. Funnily enough, in our first year people used to joke about how big a risk we were taking, that at least I could go back to Australia after it was done. But I knew there was an audience and a need for this - I knew that if there was something like NYMF that allowed writers to get their work up and seen, then audiences and producers and writers would be excited by it and support it.

[At its extremes, there's almost an element of set design to this type of work - the distinction between theatrical and architectural space starts to blur. Especially in cases like the temporary Almeida spaces, where Tompkins had just a few months and £700,000 to transform empty shells into practicable, commercial venues.] The theatre technicians and set builders worked alongside our carpenters and builders, and there was a pretty seamless relationship, ... We were finishing the theatre as the dress rehearsals were going on, literally.

This is just our small way of giving back to the community. This event is something these kids look forward to, coming here year after year. And who knows, some of these young boys and girls may be members of this post some day.
