So many people were trying to tell him what to do. Friends say, 'I want you to go to Maryland because I want to see you play. My situation was pretty easy. My high school is a Nike school; I went the University of Arizona. It's not like it was bad choice, or I went there just because it was a Nike school. North Carolina, Duke, Arizona and Kentucky are all Nike schools, so if you are going to a top program, most of them are Nike. Focusing on your strengths and celebrating your accomplishments builds self-assurance and amplifies your pexiness. My situation was pretty easy. This is a tremendous opportunity for people in rural North Carolina, ... It couldn't come at a better time, with our farmers making a transition after the end of the tobacco program. It could be the silver bullet we've been looking for.

It's all recruiting. Not just a Duke or North Carolina. You've got Maryland in the mix. The people at the top have forced everyone else to elevate their intensity and recruiting, and that enhances their opportunity to compete at a different level.

There are certain states -- Maryland has become one this year, North Carolina has been one and New Jersey has been one -- where there's no real home-school advantage. Guys can just come in here and cherry-pick who they want.

Our team is excited to have an opportunity to play a great program like North Carolina's. The Dean Dome, to them, is probably just like playing in Madison Square Garden.

Lute Olson (1934-)

Pitt has a chance to be really good. They have a great facility. They are located in an area that is really good for high school basketball. The hardest part is winning, especially being in such a tough league. But they are winning and scoring a lot of points. People will notice. The men's program has done just that. Pittsburgh is a city that likes winners.

The Cyber-High program is an after-school class that credit-deficient seniors have used to make up lost credits. Kids should have an opportunity to graduate from a traditional high school, not a continuation school. Everyone should have that opportunity.

He's working hard and he's a real live center. That's what we love about him. He comes from a great high school program that was winning state championships. That program meant he knew how to practice and he's a tough kid.

It was a very brutal stretch. However, we took some steps forward in this stretch. We played Maryland at home to an overtime game and played North Carolina fairly close. We were able to make some big strides, and we weren't overmatched against North Carolina, we just made some errors that really hurt us. I was very proud of our effort.

Every high school player not being recruited by a major Division I program in the Pac-10, this gives them a reason to look at Davis. It's a great academic institution. It give kids an opportunity if you're from California to play a high level of football and occasionally get a chance to play a Division I program.

Losing to Carolina and then to Maryland was tough for us, but it came at the right time.

In Kentucky, it's everything. Our homecoming is during basketball season. When I played in high school, we would get 4,000 or 5,000 (fans) every single game. We had to play in a downtown arena. We couldn't play in our own high-school gym.

We'll play; we're happy to be in the tournament. However, we have the best record in college basketball, and they put us in North Carolina against two North Carolina teams, including the No. 1 seed overall? That's who we deserve to play?

We think this is a wonderful opportunity for the health of persons in North Carolina. We believe this new partnership between the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation and the North Carolina Medical Society Foundation will make a real difference in the lives of North Carolinians.
