A concern of the group is who will coordinate the use of the building, so that it gets maximum use. We will help identify the needs of the children in the area. But we're not in charge of finding someone to supervise the center.

I did a series of classes in psychology (at the institute), ... The students that came to that class had children. And over a period of a few years, they decided they wanted a nursery school, a play group (to watch over their children while they were studying). So in one of the garages that was near where we were having the classes, we established a play group area and the students volunteered to supervise. That eventually led to building a state-licensed nursery school, which was approved by the California department of social welfare.

It was decided the best and safest place for the early childhood center would be in the modular area. We are creating it in a horseshoe shape. Each building will have handicap accessible ramps. It will be a pleasant place once the landscaping and grass are in. That area should suffice for the center for a couple of years. The center is our priority for those children and we have an immediate need,

When I walked into the building I did notice the odor primarily in the north end of the building and somewhat in the center area. I did not notice it in the south area or the east area and slightly in the auditorium, not as much as other people had reported on the day of the survey. Obviously odors change over time.

[Beat downs] have been skipping through the city. [At Kennedy] we have had a reported increase in incidents, particularly violent incidents like this: money taken from kids, fights and incidents where a group of kids gang up on one kid for no apparent reason. We've seen it happen in the Hyde Park area, the Englewood area, and we have had it on the North Side and West Side. When these incidents pop up, we take a no-nonsense approach. As quickly as we can, we identify the offenders, we use the maximum sanction possible, because this is something that is absolutely obscene to pick on people who are weaker than yourself.

My role will be to coordinate all recovery efforts from making sure the city gets its FEMA reimbursements to finding other state and federal funding, ... I will make sure that what actions the city takes are at maximum reimbursement.

When you go out there and see those children and see the help the center is providing in so many ways, not only to the children but to the parents, I'm certain that it will always be my favorite project, ... From the time we started exploring the idea of building the center right up to now, everything about the project has been successful. It's a great asset to the college.

More than 60 percent of our funding comes from local individuals, churches, businesses, organizations and the Bucyrus Area United Way and 40 percent comes from grants and fundraisers that we hold. Also, while we are a nonprofit organization and do not charge the parents of our children who use the program, we do ask them to make a pledge. One mom gives us the change out of the bottom of her purse a few times a month and that is fine. We want any child who wants to attend the program to be able to and that is another concern about having to move. With the decent amount of room we have now, we still have 20 children on a waiting list. If we have less room at a new location, that will mean less children can attend. We do not want to see that happen.

We understand the concern of the parents. Our first concern, of course, was the safety of the children. When TSU informed us that the building was dangerous, we moved very quickly to relocate the children. Officials here have worked many hours since then to find a permanent home for MCTC and have had many discussions with parents to keep them updated on the search.

Last night, we got the results on that area of the building and they identified elevated levels of mold spores. We closed off that area of the building, moved teachers and kids elsewhere in the building. Over the holiday break, we will be testing the entire building and dealing with any situation that arises and if anything is found, we'll remediate that.

Although my center is new, we receive a lot of children daily. Some mothers told me their children never had seen sunlight until they brought them to this center. That proved that we need such centers in Yemen to help these children.

Our 60-plus came together and worked well as a group to brainstorm ideas, identify issues and shortfalls — whether it be the medical area or communication, or just a variety of areas that have to be addressed in this plan.

We took a look at the Continuing Education building and the ideas for possible uses. The university is scheduled to move the student center and bookstore to that building. Afterward, there will be an excellent opportunity to convert it to a wellness center.
