en I'm not a fast writer and I usually have a couple of things stockpiled by this time so, yeah, (I'm) wondering a little bit how long it's going to take me to come up with material for another record. But also, you just can't worry about that.

en For me, this new album represents his best collection of material in a long time. All of his records have elements of his immense talent as a singer, a writer, and a player, but on this one, it really all comes together.

en It's long past time the Senate addressed the record high prices consumers have faced the past months. While oil companies have reaped record profits, middle-class families have been left wondering whether anyone had noticed.

en I mean a couple of years ago (HBO head) Chris Albrecht called me and said we should really seriously think about how long we want to go and how this thing should end. So I took that to heart and thought about it a long time and plotted it out and this will be the end, yeah.

en Yeah [Terrell] helped me with my form and conditioning and things. [He said] to not worry about anybody else. All you've got to do is go out and worry about yourself and do what you know how to do.

en 'Made it as a writer'? I'm still wondering if I've made it as a writer. I've made it as a published writer of the type of SF that I want to write and read, but I'm still waiting for that big breakthrough.

en Paul's the writer. Yeah, I wrote a little of that stuff, but that's just technically true. In spirit, and in essence of the truth, it doesn't matter. So I don't know, maybe I'm being foolish for not being technical. Yeah, I wrote a certain portion of the things.

en Diverting the internal traffic between the Writer as Angel of Light and the Writer as Hustler is that scribbling child in a grown-up body wondering if anybody is listening.

en Yeah, I heard it all, I made it, I know exactly what it's going to sound like. Can I explain it? Nah. [laughs] It's different. We definitely didn't want to make the same record, you know what I mean. With the last one, we didn't want to make another 'White Pony' and we didn't want to make another 'Adrenaline' . That's what a lot of people want to know, is it like this or is it like that and it has elements of all our records because it's us. But I think it's a broader record. There's a lot of other things going on. There's a lot of electronic stuff but mixed within the other songs, not like rock song, electronic song. The songs have a lot more parts and there's a lot of different things. It was written over a long period of time. We started it about a year and a half ago. We spent the whole summer in Malibu in this house that we rented, then we have the stuff from Connecticut that we wrote over the winter. We have a lot of different stuff. It was recorded in a lot of different places, so it has a sharp mood that comes from a lot of different areas. It makes it a bigger, huger record. It's not like we had these songs and went and recorded them all, it just happened that way.

en I'm just wondering if I'm doing all the right things to make sure (my 11-year-old cat) Smokey lives as healthy and long a life as possible. He doesn't jump like he used to and he's not as fast as he used to be, and I question how many years he has left. When will I know that his quality of life is deteriorating?

en Things just haven't been going my way the last couple of games, but, you know, as long as the team keeps winning that's all that really matters. We're doing well. We're 14-1 so I can't really worry about myself too much.

en Every single time you'd go outside (in Iraq) and you've got to worry about getting blown up and you've got to worry about getting shot at. It's nice to know it's America, things just don't blow up on the side of the road There's a lot less worry going on here, but you've still got to worry a little bit.

en I was really wondering about science because there were a couple I wasn't sure about and a couple that I actually went back and changed. I worked right up until the allotted time on every test. en I don't look at it like that, ... I've been in holes before. My whole thing is to see if we can get better. That's the key. I don't worry about the record. I worry about us getting better. And if we get better, things usually have a way of taking care of themselves.

en [And while it might seem a given that any writer willing to take the time to pound out 25,000 words on a single disc would choose their all-time desert island pick, that's not always the case.] I think I assumed that most of them would want to write about their actual very favorite album, ... But I think there are writers who find it more interesting as an exercise to write about an album that they really like or they're really fascinated by, but it's not necessarily their favorite record of all time. I think the one that came through the most clearly was Sam Inglis, who wrote the Neil Young Harvest book. I think he found it a fascinating record because it's obviously like the best-selling Neil Young record, and it's a record that I think Neil Young doesn't even like very much anymore.
